The Prieshood of Padre Pio (3)

Padre Pio did not spend all his life in the confessional (although the sacrament of penance took so much of his time), but he also exercised all the other facets of his priestly ministry: Baptism, First Holy Communion, Marriages¡¦ In accomplishing his duty, Padre Pio had always in mind the sanctification of souls, hence his insistence on preparing properly to the reception of the sacraments.

The preparation of young people for marriage exemplifies his views on the holiness of life required from Catholics. Here is the testimony of Paolo Siena published in a recent book:

¡°Padre Pio told me how I had to behave before our marriage. I could go out with John, who was at that point officially my fiancé, but only by day and with a third person. With him there would be no talk about our future married life; no intimacy, not even a kiss; frequent confession and daily communion. This was the recipe given to me by Padre Pio. Our relationship was so chaste that people thought we were brother and sister.

The six months of engagement that prepared us for our marriage were marked by a continuous prayer. Looking back, after almost sixty years of life together, I can say that Padre Pio's ¡®recipe¡¯ has worked and that I and John love each other today like in the first day. Padre Pio told me: ¡®When love is burned before the wedding, everything ends soon. Continence prepares for a long and happy marriage¡¯.¡±
