7. Padre Pio, the Church and Archbishop

Padre Pio experienced all kinds of suffering (from the devil, from his wounds¡¦) but what hurt him most were the pains he received from the authorities of the Church.

Padre Pio had to face not only the jealousy of priests or prelates, like the bishop of Manfredonia, but also the severity of the Vatican. Already in June 1922, restrictions were placed on people¡¯s access to him. His daily Mass had to be said at different times every day without prior notice to prevent the faithful from attending it. He was forbidden to write any letter.

From 1924 – 1931 various statements were made by the Holy See that denied the supernaturality of Padre Pio¡¯s stigmata and actions. On 9 June 1931, Padre Pio was ordered by the same Holy See to desist from all activities except the celebration of the Mass, which was to be in private. By early 1933 though, Pope Pius XI reverted the ban on Padre Pio¡¯s public celebration of Mass, saying, ¡°I have not been badly disposed toward Padre Pio, but I have been badly informed.¡±

Padre Pio¡¯s faculties were progressively restored. First, the confessions of men were allowed (25 March 1934) and then women (12 May 1934). In 1939 when Pope Pius XII was elected pope, he began to encourage people to visit Padre Pio. More and more people began to make pilgrimages.

A new period of persecution started under the Pontificate of John XXIII, but they ceased with Paul VI who had great respect for Padre Pio, so much so that he allowed him to say the Traditional Latin Mass to the end.

In 1968, a few months before his death, Padre Pio received the visit of Archbishop Lefebvre who came to request prayers for the forthcoming general chapter of the Holy Ghost Fathers. Though short, the meeting of these two great servitors of the Church is worth mentioning.

Despite the persecution he received from the authorities of the Church, Padre Pio never showed any bitterness towards them but trusted in Divine Providence and waited patiently for better days to come.
