The Two Resurrections (31th. March.2013)

Today we rejoice exceedingly with our Lord Jesus Christ for His Resurrection! It is the source, the model and the guarantee of our own Resurrection. But Our Lord Jesus Christ has only one Resurrection, while we have two resurrections. Let us hear Our Lord in St John¡¯s Gospel, chapter five:

¡°Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself: And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man. Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God. And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment¡± (Jn. 5:25-29).

So here you have two hours that are coming, one that ¡°now is¡±, the other is not yet now but at the end of the world; one in which ¡°the dead¡± shall hear the voice of the Son of God, the other in which ¡°all that are in the graves¡± shall hear the voice of the Son of God; one in which all who hear shall live and the other in which some will rise unto the resurrection of life and others unto another resurrection, not of life but of judgement.

There are two resurrections because there are two lives, two births, two food, two deaths. There are two lives, the life of the body and the life of the soul. Indeed, if there were not two lives, how could Our Lord say: ¡°He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day¡± (Jn. 6:55). If he already has everlasting life, it seems that then he would not die, and thus would not need a ¡°resurrection in the last day¡±. Those words of Our Lord manifestly mean that he has the everlasting life in his soul, but his body will die and thus he will need that ¡°resurrection in the last day¡±

The body lives by its union with the soul, which is the life of the body; the soul lives by its union with God, its union with Christ, the Son of God, Who is ¡°the way, the truth and THE LIFE¡± (Jn. 14:6); St Paul says that ¡°Christ is our life¡±: ¡°For you are dead; and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ shall appear, who is your life, then you also shall appear with him in glory¡± (Col. 3:3-4). That which is the main love of our soul is often said to be ¡°our life¡±; thus one would say, ¡°my life is sport, my life is music, my life is mountaineering, etc.¡± but none of these things can give ¡°everlasting life¡±. Only our Lord Jesus Christ is everlasting life and thus can give everlasting life, true life.

As there is the birth of the body, so there is the ¡°new birth¡± of the soul by Baptism: ¡°unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God¡± (Jn. 3:5). This new birth is the beginning of the spiritual life, it is not merited; it is a free gift of the Merciful Triune God.

As there is food for the body, so there is food for the soul: ¡°Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God¡± (Mt. 4:4). So the word of God is food for our soul; and the supreme food for our soul is the Holy Eucharist, that is, the very Word of God, Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, our Lord Jesus Christ Himself: ¡°For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him¡± (Jn. 6:56-57). As the last sentence clearly says, the spiritual life consists in that intimate union with Christ: He abides in us and we in Him: ¡°That Christ may dwell by faith in your hearts; that being rooted and founded in charity, You may be able to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth: To know also the charity of Christ, which surpasseth all knowledge, that you may be filled unto all the fulness of God¡± (Eph. 3:17-19). That deep knowledge of God that surpasses all knowledge is the beatific vision, supreme life of the Saints in Heaven.

That new life is – of itself – such that it can continue unto everlasting life: ¡°Whosoever is born of God, committeth not sin: for his seed abideth in him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God¡± (1 Jn. 3:9). That ¡°seed of God¡± is sanctifying grace, participation in the life of Christ. Sin does not flow from that seed of God; on the contrary, that seed inclines us to the opposite of sin, to sacrifice.

But if one puts aside the influence of grace in his soul, and starts to listen to the allurements and deceits of this sinful world, then he can fall into sin, first venial sin – and this is the sickness of the soul – and then even mortal sin, and as the name says it, this is the death of the soul. As death of the body is the separation of the soul from the body, so death of the soul is the separation from God: one has lost ¡°the bond of perfection¡± (Col. 3:14) which is charity. Anything opposed to, incompatible with charity is a mortal sin. Sin is the greatest damage that can happen to a soul. One cannot lose more than losing God. When one hurts his neighbour, one does in fact even more damage to one¡¯s own soul: when one kills one¡¯s neighbour¡¯s body, in fact one kills one¡¯s own soul!

Sin, the death of the soul, is the cause of the death of the body. The death of the body is the punishment and consequence of the death of the soul. Our Lord Jesus Christ is The Life; He came ¡°that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly¡± (Jn. 10:10). First of all, He came to give back the life of the soul; this is the first resurrection: when souls, dead by sin, return to life by conversion and faith: ¡°hearing the words of the Son of God¡± (Jn. 5:25) = believing in them. And ¡°to those who received Him, He has given the power to become the sons of God¡¦ those who are born of God¡± (Jn. 1:12-13) – and St John continues: ¡°and the Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us¡± (Jn. 1:14): thus the bodily birth of the Son of God is the pattern and cause of our spiritual birth. For Him, He is born in eternity from the Father: He is not just living, He is The Life. Similarly, His bodily resurrection is the pattern of our spiritual resurrection, as St Paul says: ¡°Know you not that all we, who are baptized in Christ Jesus, are baptized in his death? For we are buried together with him by baptism into death; that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life¡± (Rom. 6:3-4).

As the death of the body is the consequence of sin, so is the victory over bodily death the consequence of the victory over sin. The Victory over bodily death is that of Easter; it is the consequence of the Victory over sin that was won by the Sacrifice on the Cross: ¡°He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross. For which cause God also hath exalted him, and hath given him a name which is above all names: That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth: And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father¡± (Phil. 2:8-11).

And so will it be for us: if we share in the victory over sin, by the spiritual resurrection, then we will also share in the victory over death by a glorious bodily resurrection at the end of the world: ¡°Our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ, Who will reform the body of our lowness, made like to the body of his glory, according to the operation whereby also he is able to subdue all things unto himself¡± (Phil. 3:20-21). This glorious resurrection is the ¡°resurrection of life¡±, truly worth the name ¡°resurrection¡±, but reserved to the good, to ¡°them that have done good things¡± (Jn. 5:29). As for those who ¡°have done evil¡±, their body will be reunited to their soul (that is a resurrection), but in order to participate in the chastisement of their soul, i.e. burning for ever: that is not worth the name of life, but rather of judgement, i.e. of condemnation.

As for the present time, now is the time for the spiritual resurrection, not yet the time for the bodily resurrection. Let us therefore strive to be as St Paul says: ¡°dead to sin, but alive unto God, in Christ Jesus our Lord¡± (Rom. 6:11). Let us ¡°walk in newness of life¡± (Rom. 6:4) ¡°Therefore, if you be risen with Christ, seek the things that are above; where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God: Mind the things that are above, not the things that are upon the earth¡± (Col. 3:1-2). ¡°When Christ shall appear, who is your life, then you also shall appear with him in glory¡± (Col. 3:4). St Paul¡¯s epistle to the Colossians was written just in the time of Easter, and truly contains that Easter spirit:

¡°Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, lust, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is the service of idols. For which things the wrath of God cometh upon the children of unbelief, In which you also walked some time, when you lived in them. But now put you also all away: anger, indignation, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech out of your mouth. Lie not one to another: stripping yourselves of the old man with his deeds, And putting on the new, him who is renewed unto knowledge, according to the image of him that created him. Where there is neither Gentile nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian nor Scythian, bond nor free. But Christ is all, and in all. Put ye on therefore, as the elect of God, holy, and beloved, the bowels of mercy, benignity, humility, modesty, patience: Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if any have a complaint against another: even as the Lord hath forgiven you, so do you also. But above all these things have charity, which is the bond of perfection: And let the peace of Christ rejoice in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be ye thankful¡± (Col. 3:5-15).

The Blessed Virgin Mary, by a special privilege, was never touched by the spiritual contagion of death from Adam: she was always living of that life of grace, that life of Christ, and now even her body shares in the glory of the risen body of Christ in Heaven. Let us ask her to intercede for us, that we may truly life a life conformed with the risen Christ, ¡°dead to sin and living unto God in Christ Jesus our Lord¡± so that we may one day also share in the second resurrection, that blessed ¡°resurrection of life¡± of the body so that we may be among the blessed for ever. Amen.
