Divine Mercy


On Friday we had the very beautiful feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. In recent years, we have heard much of a new devotion to the ¡°Divine Mercy¡±. But what is devotion to the Sacred Heart if not devotion to the ¡°Incarnated Divine Mercy¡±? ¡°God is Charity¡± (1 Jn. 4:16): and Archbishop Lefebvre used to say that ¡°Mercy is the utmost of Charity¡±. God¡¯s dealing with mankind is above all for the glory of His infinite Mercy, through the Incarnation and Redemption.


Indeed the Angels are such highly perfect spiritual creatures that they are not vacillating as we are: once they make a decision, they stick to it; they make their decision with full knowledge of their consequences, and thus no unforeseen circumstance can happen to them. This is in itself a quality, that makes them resemble more to God, Who is immutable. But if they make a wrong choice, it has catastrophic consequences. Thus the good angels offered themselves with tremendous devotion, with the full power of their high spiritual natures, to the service of our Lord Jesus Christ. Indeed St Paul says: ¡°when He bringeth in the First Begotten into the world, He saith: ¡®And let all the angels of God adore him¡¯!¡± (Heb. 1:6). That was the test of the Angels. The good offered themselves in the service of Christ totally. This was a final decision and their tremendous fervour deserved immediate reward in Heaven. But the bad ones turned themselves definitively against God out of pride; they were stubborn and fixed in their evil choice, and thus were condemned for ever in Hell. The very perfection of their angelic nature did not give room for repentance and thus for Divine Mercy.


Thus God created also human being, lower creatures, less perfect than the angels, but by the very fact of their lower perfection they were capable of change, and thus of being corrected. And in His Divine Charity, God cared and continually cares for us men. Pride had lost us, the pride of Adam and Eve who wanted to become ¡°like to God¡± (Gen. 3:5) by their own way, departing from the obedience to God. The Most Holy Trinity decided to redeem man by a tremendous way of humility and love: the Second Divine Person would take a human nature like ours and be born of a real human mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary: ¡°Christ Jesus¡¦ being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant [human nature], being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. He [further] humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross¡± (Phil. 2:5-8). ¡°God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting¡± (Jn. 3:16).


 ¡°God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth¡± (Jn. 4:24). ¡°It is the spirit that giveth life: the flesh profiteth nothing¡± (Jn. 6:64). Does that mean that the flesh of Our Lord does not profit us? St Augustine and many other Fathers of the Church say: ¡°if the flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ would not profit us, the Word would never have become flesh¡± (Jn. 1:14)! The flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ is most profitable for us: His very Heart was beating with love for us, and this is most profitable spiritually for us!


First of all, man quickly found out that by himself he could not go up, he could only fall. Thus after the first fall, the affections of humans have turned away from God towards earthly things. To get us back, the Divine Mercy came down to us where we were, taking not only a human soul, but even a human body, with a real heart and everything real, so that He would meet us where we were and draw us back to His Father. Often men do not think as they should, and are led by their emotions: the Son of God, taking a human Heart, calls us even at that level, at the level of our emotions, and draws our hearts back to Him and to His Father.


In the perfect mirror of His human Heart, our Lord Jesus Christ gives us to understand His Divine Charity and Mercy: how much God cares for us! ¡°This is the Heart that has loved men so much, and is requited by so much ingratitude and indignities.¡± He enlightens our intelligence; He inflames our hearts, both by the example of his own Heart, but also by pouring His grace: ¡°the charity of God is poured forth in our hearts, by the Holy Ghost, who is given to us¡± (Rom. 5:5). And Who gave us the Holy Ghost if not our Lord Jesus Christ Himself? He said that He went up to Heaven precisely for this purpose, sending us His Spirit.


The very mystery of the Incarnation, the Incarnate Divine Mercy, goes further and continues daily in the Sacraments: God uses such material things, as a continuation of His Incarnation, to reach us where we had fallen by our sins, and to lift us up to Him.


Material things alone would not help us; but together with the Spirit of Christ, they are most useful to us: first of all and above all other material things, the very body of our Lord Jesus Christ is most profitable for our salvation. It profits us first by the fact that this body is the Victim which our Lord has offered (by his soul) on the altar of the Cross for our salvation; it profits us then by the fact that this body is become the very food of our soul in the most Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Eucharist. It profits us also by the inexhaustible examples of holiness He gave us in every aspect of His human life on earth: examples of humility, charity, patience, kindness, meekness, fortitude, perseverance, obedience, etc. It will profit further at the end of the world, being the pattern according to which our body will rise again – if by the grace of God we would have persevered unto the end in our fidelity to Him.


 The feast of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus is thus the celebration of this inexhaustible love of God for us in so many ways, but particularly by the Incarnation and Redemption.

My dear brethren, if our Lord Jesus Christ did take a human body and soul, a human Heart that beat in a human chest out of love for us, it is not so that we ignore His Heart, or pretend to be able to go straight to God without the mediation of his most Sacred Humanity, especially of His Heart. Here again the Fathers of the Church teach us that if anyone despises these material things he cannot please God. Yes, the Heart of Jesus is material, as the whole of His Body: yet it is most holy by the hypostatic union with the Word of God, the Son of God: that Heart is not only holy, but also communicates holiness to those who love him, and the more we love Him, the most He blessed us and sanctifies us.


¡°I am come to cast fire on the earth; and what will I, but that it be kindled?¡± (Lk. 12:49). He came to enkindle the fire of Divine Charity on earth, the fires of the Holy Ghost, the fires that are burning in His Sacred Heart. If your heart is touched, He wants that you in your turn communicate this fire to your neighbour, your family, your friends and bring them to Him, so that they may be sanctified by Him. The Sacred Heart is missionary!


If anyone is weak, let him come to this Heart and he will be strengthened; if anyone is tempted, let him come to this Heart and he will be defended and protected; if anyone is saddened, not only by sickness but also by the million miseries of this earthly life, let him come to this Heart and he will be ¡°filled with all joy and peace in believing; that you may abound in hope, and in the power of the Holy Ghost¡± (Rom. 15:13). If anyone feels oppressed by the weight of his sins, let him come to this Heart and he will find the healing of forgiveness and cleanliness and will be able to make a new start of his way to God


If there ever was a person who loved the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it was the Blessed Virgin Mary, with her Immaculate Heart! No one ever loved the Sacred Heart as much as she did! And all the marvels that have been done in her Immaculate Heart are the workmanship of the Sacred Heart: He is the one who inspired her with such absolute virginity and purity, with such fervour in her love for God and with such mercy in her love for us, with superhuman courage and patience at the foot of the Cross, with such meekness that she receives all who come to her for relief, with such humility that though she is the highest of all created person, yet she only considers herself as ¡°the little handmaid of the Lord¡±.


O Immaculate Heart of Mary, we come to you to obtain the grace to know better the marvels of the Sacred Heart, in order to obtain mercy for our soul, forgiveness for our sins and the strength to avoid them faithfully; we come to you to obtain from the Sacred heart the grace to be filled with his grace, with his Love, with his fervour.


O Sacred Heart of Jesus, make our hearts like unto Thine! Take off from our chest our own heart and put Thy Heart in its place, so that we may by Thine for all eternity, in the contemplation of Thee with thy Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost for ever and ever! Amen.
