The Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ proven by the Prophecies

My Dear Faithful,
A wise man once said: ¡°There is nothing new under the sun.¡± (Eccl. 1:10) To the same problems, we can give the same solutions.  When we consider the world right here around us, mostly pagan, we can think of the first Christians who were also in a totally pagan world.  What arguments did they use to prove the Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ? Let us use the same.

When we consider attentively the Holy Gospels, we find that they used two major arguments: miracles and prophecies.  Here is a man that claims to be God. He is either telling the truth or He is madman telling lies.  He must prove it.  And Our Lord Jesus Christ did prove it by His innumerable miracles and by fulfilling all the prophecies about Him.

I would like, since we are at the door of Christmas, to speak to you about these prophecies, particularly those concerning his birth.  Firstly, let us say a few things about prophecy in general, then we will look at some of them and see how Our Blessed Lord fulfilled them.

1) Prophecies in General
A prophet is one who speaks in the name of God.  We often think that a prophet is only one who announces the future.  That is wrong.  A prophet relays God¡¯s words.  He tells us, in the name of God, what we are to believe, what we are to do, and also, he can foretell the future.  Moses was the greatest prophet of the Old Testament, and notice that he is most famous, not only for telling the future but also for establishing, in the name of God, what has been called, the Mosaic Law.

All those who spoke in the name of God in the Old Testament can be called prophets, but Tradition and Holy Scripture tell us that there are 4 major prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel, and 12 minor prophets like Michaeus, Jonas, Zacharias.

The great prophecy which ties all the Old Testament together is the announcement that there will be a Savior to repair for the sin of Adam and Eve and for all sins. Moses announced that the Savior would be a prophet like himself, that is why the Jews asked St John the Baptist :¡±Art thou the Prophet?¡± (John 1:21)

There is the general prophecy that Our Lord will come, and there are prophecies on all the multiple details of his life as well. More than 400 details were foretold over a period of 4000 years.  On Easter Sunday, Our Lord opened the eyes of his disciples to make them see this connection between the prophecies and their fulfillment in Him.  How many times do we read in the Gospels: such and such happened, ¡°as it is written¡±, or ¡°as the prophet said¡±.  ¡°Search the Scriptures, Jesus said to the Jews, they give testimony of Me.¡± (Jo 9:35)

The Church, as a perfect teacher, helps us to see the fulfillment of these prophecies through the liturgy.  Read carefully your missal, and check the sources of the liturgical texts.  See how the Church constantly uses texts of the Old Testament for all the feasts of Our Lord and of the Saints. As St Jerome said, the New Testament is hidden in the Old Testament, and the Old Testament becomes clear when reading the New Testament.
2) Some prophecies about the Birth of the Savior

These prophecies were made at different times, in different centuries, by different prophets but they all fit perfectly in the life of Our Lord.  Imagine if 100 people in different parts of the world at different times would make each a piece of a puzzle over a period of many centuries, and one day the pieces were collected together and all fit perfectly.  This is humanly impossible.  It is humanly impossible to predict that you will have male descendants over a period of 2000 years!  How can you possibly know before you get married that you will have a son, that he will have a son, etc.?  Only God can do that.  And he did that through the prophecies.  Let us now mention a few.

The Savior, as many prophecies announce, would be of the family of Abraham (2000 years BC) and of David (1000 BC). That means if we take 25 years for each generation, 80 and 40 generations in advance.

The prophet Daniel announced the year of his birth, 490 years before.  (9:24) Seventy weeks here mean seventy times seven years.

Seventy weeks are shortened upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, that transgression may be finished, and sin may have an end, and iniquity may be abolished; and everlasting justice may be brought; and vision and prophecy may be fulfilled; and the saint of saints may be anointed.

The  prophet Michaeus announced that the place of his birth would be Bethlehem: (5:2)

AND THOU, BETHLEHEM Ephrata, art a little one among the thousands of Juda: out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be the ruler in Israel: and his going forth is from the beginning, from the days of eternity.

Although He would live in Nazareth (Matthew 2:23) And coming he dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was said by prophets: That he shall be called a Nazarene.

He would be born at the middle of the night. (Wisdom 18:14-15)

For while all things were in quiet silence, and the night was in the midst of her course, Thy almighty word leapt down from heaven from thy royal throne, as a fierce conqueror into the midst of the land of destruction.

The prophet Isaiah predicted that His Mother would be a Virgin. ( 7:14)

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel.

Moses predicted that He would be the first child of this Virgin: ( Exodus 13:1-2)

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:  Sanctify unto me every firstborn that openeth the womb among the children of Israel, as well of men as of beasts: for they are all mine.

A star would announce his birth: Numbers 18-16

A STAR SHALL RISE out of Jacob and a scepter shall spring up from Israel:

And we could continue with almost all the details.  You see how we have to follow the story of the Life of Our Lord with great faith.  Our Lord Himself used the argument of prophecies to prove His Divinity, the first Christians also used it, it is clear in St Paul, when he says that the law (is) a shadow of the good things to come, (Hebrew 10:1)

So, we must not neglect this arguments to strengthen our Faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ, as the only Savior and His Church therefore as the only Church, and to be ourselves a light to others to find the Savior

May the great Queen of Prophets obtain for us all a greater knowledge of her divine Son, so that

As he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, we should be holy and unspotted in his sight in charity. (Ephesian 1:4)

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Fr. Daniel Couture
