Feast of St Michae - September 29, 2012

My Dear Brethren, Today is the feast of St Michael and of all the choirs of Angels.  The angels have a few feasts in the liturgy: there is today¡¯s feast of September 29th, then next week on October 2 we will have the feast of the guardian angels, then on October 24th, there is the feast of St Raphael the Archangel, and on March 24th  the feast of St Gabriel the archangel.

It is very important to often remember the holy angels for various reasons. Let me insist on only two of these reasons today: they are our companions in this life, and secondly, they are our models also in the practice of virtue, especially the great virtue of humility.

Firstly, they are our companions in this life.  God made a visible world and an invisible world.  We say in the Credo:  I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, of the visible and of the invisible.

Let us remember that he made the invisible world first, he created the angels before He created man.  St Thomas says that God made the angels on the first day of creation, when He said:  ¡°Let the light be!¡±   That invisible world of the angels is very beautiful. As you know, the angels are divided in 9 choirs, 3 groups of 3.  The Seraphim, the Cherubim, the Thrones: these first 3 take especially care of the worship of God: they burn with the greatest love of God, they contemplate his perfections, they serve him.  At the holy mass, for example, we should remember the presence of these highest choirs.  When we say the ¡°Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus¡±, let us remember that this is the song of the Seraphim, as the prophet Isaiah saw and heard.  They will help us to become holy in the presence of God who is infinitely holy.

Then there is the middle group of angels : the dominations, the virtues and the powers.  They take care of creation, the laws of nature, the fight against the demons who, in their hate of God, would like to destroy the world.  We should think of these good angels of the second group when we admire the beauties of nature, of a flower, of a butterfly: the angels take care of all the creatures.

Finally there is the 3rd group: the principalities, the archangels and the angels: they take care of us, humans.  God has given to each one of us an individual angel to be our companion in this life.  Let us pray to him every day, especially in our morning and evening prayers, when we travel, and in times of danger.

Second point: The angels are also our models in the practice of virtue, especially of the virtue of humility.  When the angels were tested by God, it was a test of submission to God¡¯s law, therefore a test of humility.  Lucifer and the bad angels who followed him refused to submit to God, they refused in their pride to obey, to accept to be told what to do.  That is pride.  St Michel and the good angels on the contrary knowing that no one can tell God what to do, that no one is like God, that we are all, angels and men, constantly dependent on God for our very existence, they fought and won over the devil by their humility, by their submission.

That is a very important truth: Our Lord himself said: ¡°he who humbles himself will be exalted, and he who exalts himself will be humiliated¡±.  That is true for us, humans, but it was true first for the angels.  The good angels by staying at their place, by obeying God, became strong.  The bad angels, by wanting to lift themselves, to exalt themselves , to become like God, became weak, were humiliated and were punished.  What a lesson for us!

Let us imitated the good angels by always seeking the will of God, by staying at the place God wants for each one of us, by remaining humble.  This is also what Our Blessed Lady did and said: ¡°Behold the handmaid of the Lord! Be it done unto me according to thy word!¡±  Do with me whatever you want!  She humbled herself the most, as a little handmaid, the lowest handmaid, and she became the Queen, Queen of men and also Queen of Angels!  What an example!

Let us ask Her and let us ask all the angels, especially our guardian angel, to always remember this and to put it in practice every day!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.  Amen.

Fr. Daniel Couture
