The Importance of Rosary-The Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary

My Dear Brethren,
Today is the feast of the Holy Rosary.  You know that in the Catholic Calendar, in the Church year, there are two parts: one is called the Temporal, that is, the cycle of the life of Our Blessed Lord: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost, and, the other part, overlapping these liturgical seasons, is called the Sanctoral with the feasts of the Saints, practically every day of the year.

Most of these feasts of Saints recall the day of their death, what actually the Church calls their ¡®dies natalis¡¯, which is the day of their real birth, their birth to heaven, to the eternal life, to the beatific vision.  Some feasts recall other aspects of the life of the saints: for example the Immaculate Conception of Our Blessed Lady, the birthday of St John the Baptist, the conversion of St Paul or the stigmata of St Francis of Assisi.

Other feasts recall some Catholic truths, such as the feast of All-Souls --on November 2nd  reminding us of the existence of Purgatory and the need to pray for the holy souls --, the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, on July 16th -- recalling the promise given by Our Lady to St Simon Stock that those who wear and die wearing the brown scapular will not suffer the eternal fire of hell.  Some feasts also recall historical events, for instance the feast of the apparition of Our Lady at Lourdes, on February 11th , or the victory of the Rosary in Vienna, in 1683, commemorated on September 12th , feast of the Holy Name of Mary.

Today is one of these feasts that recall an important moment in Catholic history: the victory of the Christian fleet over the Turks, in Lepanto, in 1571, through the intercession of the most holy Rosary.  It is important, whenever you come to mass to understand what the feast is on that day, because there are special graces attached to each feast, and we need to ask specifically for these graces during the mass of that feast.  Always look at a calendar, or in your missal to find out.

I would like to insist on three reasons why we have historical feasts, such as the one we are celebrating today.  Firstly, this practice is one that the Church has inherited from the Old Testament.  In the Old Testament, they also had a liturgical calendar, certain feasts and practices at certain times of the year; they also had feasts that recalled important events in the history of the Chosen People. For instance, the feast of Easter recalled the deliverance from Egypt; that of Pentecost, to recall when God gave the 10 Commandments to Moses; the feast of the Tabernacles, to recall the 40 years of living in tents in the desert.  There was also a feast to recall the victory of Judith over Holofernes, and another to recall the dedication of the second temple of Jerusalem under the Maccabees.  St Paul tells us that all the Old Testament was a shadow of the things to come, was a pre-figuration of the New Testament. Our liturgy has deep roots in the Old Testament.

Secondly, we remember important historical days out of gratitude to almighty God.  Gratitude is an important virtue in the Christian life, in all social life: the virtue of thanksgiving.  How important it is in our human life! It is easy to understand this just by looking at how hurtful is its contrary, the sin of ingratitude!  How easily we are hurt when someone, to whom we have done much good, shows ingratitude, does not even say thank you, or forget the good we have done to him!  This, we must know how to appreciate the gifts of God even more!  Think of all the gifts that God has given us!  ¡°What do you have that you have not receive¡±, says St Paul?  Everything we are, everything we have is a gift of God, when you think about it.  And when we forget to express our gratitude, He is very hurt as well!  St Paul said that in the last days men will be ungrateful.  That is terrible.  Let us not be part of these men ungrateful to the infinite merciful God!

The victory of the Rosary at Lepanto was an important intervention of Our Lady of the Rosary in the history of Europe.  Europe, at that time was practically all Catholic, and was threatened by the Turks. If they had won that battle, Europe would have become Muslim, just like now in the countries in North Africa or in the Middle East which were very Catholic once upon a time, and unfortunately fell under the Muslim domination. Now, in some of these countries, you cannot even wear a little cross on your neck!

So we need to thank Our Lady every year for that great victory, obtained through millions of rosaries said throughout Europe at the order of pope St Pius V.  The European missionaries would never have gone ¡°to the uttermost parts of the earth¡±, and even to Korea, if Europe had become Muslim. By making this a annual feast of the universal Church, the Church insists that we should never forget ¡°the mercies of the Lord¡± received on that day of October 7, 1571.

Thirdly, we remember these historical days to help us in our present and future battles.  You know the saying: ¡°Historia Magistra Vitae: history is the teacher of life¡±.  Experience is the best teacher of life! That is because experience is the result of many memories, and the more experience you have the more prudent you will be!  Memory, or the experience gained from the past, is actually one of the 8 integral parts of the virtue of prudence.  A prudent man will remember what happened in the past and that will help him to live in the present and to face the constantly changing circumstances of the future.  That is why we should often reflect on the things we wish to remember, since ¡°reflection preserves memories¡±.  It is also said that ¡°custom, or experience, is a second nature¡± that means that when we reflect on a thing frequently, we quickly call it to mind, and it helps us to act in similar circumstances.  That is the reason why the Church brings to our attention every year the same feasts, and particularly this feast of the victory of the Holy Rosary at a terrible and critical moment in the past history of the Church.

So, we have this feast, today, feast of a great victory of Our Lady, firstly, to imitate the feasts of victories in the Old Testament.  Secondly, to show our gratitude to Our Blessed Lady for this great grace of the victory of Lepanto in 1571.  And finally, to encourage us in our struggle today and in the future, to become more prudent, more wise.

By reflecting on it, we will have more trust in the power of the Holy Rosary We can be sure that Our Blessed Lady, who called herself at Fatima ¡°The Lady of the Rosary¡±, wants to help us by this means.  Our Lady has crushed all heresies in the whole world, if we pray the rosary with enough confidence, with humility, with perseverance, we will certainly obtain a new victory of the Rosary over modernism, this synthesis of all heresies. ¡°Say the rosary every day¡±, she said at Fatima.  Let us show that we understand this, that we love our Heavenly Mother, that we are truly her children by being faithful to her requests.  She will then truly show herself to be truly our Queen and our Mother.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Fr. Daniel Couture
