The King and Priest, Jesus

My Dear Faithful,
Last month I told you to pay attention to the various feasts of our beautiful liturgy.  Remember that the sacraments are signs, ¡°outward signs of an invisible grace¡±, and that each liturgical feast has a special grace that God has in store for us.  We find this grace in the feast itself and in the prayers of the mass and office of the feast.  That is the reason it is so useful to have a missal to follow the mass, or to ask the priest to explain to you the deep meaning of each feast.

Today is the feast of Christ the King.  The very name tells you clearly what it is about: Our Lord Jesus Christ is our king.  He is king, he is priest and He is prophet.  He is the only one in the whole history of the world that was at the same time: king, priest and prophet.  Many prophets were priests, but none was king.  King David was also a prophet, but he was not a priest.  Our Lord was all three: king, priest and prophet.

Prophet means that He speaks to us in the name of God, and, in His personal case, as God Himself.  The prophets are the messengers of God; they speak to us the words of God.  Jesus is obviously the greatest, being the Son of God, God Himself.  St Paul said at the beginning of the epistle to the Hebrews: ¡°God, who, at many times and in divers manners, spoke in times past to  the fathers by the prophets, last of all,  in these days hath spoken to us by his Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world.¡± (To the Hebrews chapter 1, verse 1).

Secondly, Our Lord Jesus Christ is priest.  A priest is a Mediator, the person in between, between God and men.  By becoming a man, Our Lord Jesus Christ became the perfect Mediator, since He was both man and God!  He became priest, mediator, when He became man, on the day of the Annunciation, in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  That is why Our Lady is the mother of all priests.

And thirdly, Our Blessed Lord is King.  Oh, yes, king!  It is not enough to say that He is prophet, that He is priest: He is also King!  It is not enough to give Him, like the Three Wise Men did when they visited Him on the day of the Epiphany: the incense and the myrrh, to recognize that He is true God and true Man.   We also have to give Him the gold, because He is also true King.  The offering of gold, by the Three Wise Men, was like paying a tax, recognizing the power to rule over them.  ¡°Render to Cesar what belongs to Cesar¡±, Jesus said.  That means, pay the taxes to those who rule over you politically. That is the meaning of offering the gold:  the Three Wise Men gave also gold to Jesus, the Newborn King, because they acknowledged Him as their Ruler, because they wanted to serve and obey Him.

Our Lord is Priest, prophet and King. This feast of Christ the King reminds us of all these titles of Our Lord, and the obligations that follow these prerogatives of Our Blessed Lord:  we must first believe what He says to us,  we must ¡°hear Him¡± as God the Father said, because He is ¡°the great prophet ¡°, and as such, as our Divine Prophet, ¡°He can neither deceive nor be deceived¡±, He ¡°teaches with authority¡±. His word is truth.

We must unite ourselves, secondly, to His priesthood, because ¡°In Him, the Father is well pleased¡±.  This we do by the baptismal character we have received on the day of our baptism. This character is a mark, a seal on our soul that unites us in a special way to the Priesthood of Our Lord.  It gives us the right to receive graces from Him, graces He does not give to those who are not baptized.  At confirmation, we received another character that entitles us to more graces, graces to fight for our Holy Catholic Faith. And by the priestly ordination, the priest receives a third character, that gives, this time, not just the power to receive graces, but the power to actively give the sacraments, to give the grace of God.  All these characters unite us, in different ways, to the Sacred Priesthood of Our blessed Lord.

And, thirdly, since ¡°all power has been given to Him in Heaven and on earth¡±, we must submit to Jesus as our Supreme King.  That is the particular grace of the Feast of today: the grace to understand the necessity to submit to Our Lord Jesus Christ, God and Man, and the grace to actually do it, to submit ourselves completely to Him: our minds, our wills, our conscience, our soul, our bodies, our personal lives, our family lives, our social lives.  All.  ¡°You shall love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind¡± (Mt 22:37).

So, during this mass, let us examine ourselves:  are we entirely subject to Our Lord, or not?  Some people simply refuse to submit to Him, like Lucifer who said: ¡° I will not serve¡±.  Other people say: Jesus is very good, I admire his life and his teaching, but I want to live my religion my own way, I will decide how I will serve God.  These are the heretics, who pick and choose among the teaching of Our Blessed Lord what they want to believe and do. Others will say: I am a Roman Catholic, I know all these things, I want to obey Our Lord in everything ¡¦ except one or two!  We are sometimes afraid of giving Him everything, absolutely everything.

There will be some laws of God or of the Church, or some acts of virtues, or a sacrifice, which we are unwilling to do for Him! It can be, for example, the need to forgive someone – Our Lord said if we do not forgive, He will not forgive us! It can be the rules of Christian modesty, especially for ladies – there is a Catholic way to dress, and there is a non-Catholic way to do so.  Just as you recognize a Muslim lady on the street, you should be able to recognize a Catholic lady!  I made the experience more than once at the airport, as I was waiting for some volunteers who was coming to help us in our medical mission:  the only lady dress properly, modestly, with a nice dress, in the crowd, was the right one, was our volunteer!  I was very glad!

Finally, this feast of Christ the King is a recent feast, it was established only in 1925, by Pope Pius XI.  It is Divine Providence that decided the timing of this new feast: it comes at a time when men are revolting again and more than ever against the submission due to Christ Our Lord.  And now, with the terrible error of religious liberty, promoted by Vatican II, the situation in the world and in the Church has become worse than ever, and this feast has therefore become more important than ever.  Jesus has become a god like any other god!  Remember the Passion: Pontius Pilate asked the people to choose between Jesus and the murderer Barabbas. That was an image of what is happening today: they are teaching that we can be saved in any religion, ¡°that all the religions have means of salvation¡±, as Vatican II said.  People can choose between Jesus and Barabbas, between Jesus and Buddha, between Jesus and Mahomet!

No, we have no other King than Our Lord Jesus Christ!  We want to serve no other than Our Lord Jesus Christ!  We can be saved by no other than Our Lord Jesus Christ!  We want to submit to Him our bodies and our soul, our individual life and our family and social lives, until our last breath, in order to reign with Him for all eternity in Heaven.

May Our blessed Lady, our Heavenly Queen, the Queen of Mercy, obtain for us the graces to be faithful in serving Her Divine Son as best as we can, for the greater glory of God and the salvation of many souls.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
