On Confession

My Dear Brethren,
The theme of this sermon will be confession, in 3 points: the importance of confession in a good Catholic life, the advantage of frequent confession, and a few points about confession to a foreign priest, which is what is happening here unfortunately frequently.
Are you, what is called, ¡°a practicing Catholic¡±?  Coming to Mass is a partial answer to this question. It could be called the 1st degree.  Just coming to Mass. Coming to mass and going to confession, would be the 2nd degree, coming to mass, going to confession and receiving holy communion, can be called the 3rd, and if, on top of this, you pray every day, especially your morning and evening prayers, and the holy rosary, then you can truly be called a practicing Catholic.

First point: confession is an essential part of a real Catholic life.  Why?
Confession is as much a part of a normal Catholic life as washing our body is a part of our physical life. You take great care of your body: you wash it daily, you don¡¯t want it to smell, you take care of small sicknesses and wounds if you have some, you go and see the doctor, when it is more serious.  We all do this naturally, because we are attached to life!  We only have one life and we do all we can to keep it as long as possible, since we only have one.  Isn¡¯t that so?  When we speak of this life, we mean the physical life, the natural life.

It is exactly the same for our soul.  We only have one!  We received another life in our soul, on the day of our baptism.  On that day, we were ¡®born again¡¯, as Jesus wants us to be, we started to live of another life, the supernatural life of grace, we became children of God.  And just as we take a daily care of our bodily life, we must take an even greater care of this spiritual life of the soul.  This is where confession comes in.  It is the great sacrament Our Blessed Lord instituted for the sins we commit after our baptism.

Our soul gets ¡®dirty¡¯ or even ¡®dies¡¯ by the sins we commit.  By the big sins, the mortal sins, we kill this life of the soul, we tell God to get out of the house of our soul.  We become like a dead body, a corpse, disgusting, smelling, repulsive, to the saints who look at us, to our Guardian Angel who accompanies us all the time.  Padre Pio could ¡®smell¡¯ the state of the soul of his penitents, in confession.  Different sins had different smells; that is how he knew which sins they had committed. It was always the foul smell of corruption, like in a garbage dump.

Venial sins are like sickness, or dirt, or dust on the soul.  They don¡¯t kill the soul, but they hurt it, they stain it. They stop the fruits of the soul.  It is like a tree in winter: it is still alive but it gives no leaves or fruits.

So, a normal practicing Catholic must be aware of this other life in his soul, of this supernatural life received at baptism, and he must be conscious that he must keep his soul clean, that he must wash it regularly.  He knows that he needs to go to confession regularly, to wash his soul in the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  That Divine Blood is the only ¡°soap¡± that can wash away the stains of sin on our soul: ¡°Without the shedding of (this) Blood, there is no forgiveness of sins¡± St Paul says.

It is a sad reality, especially in the last 50 years, since Vatican II, that the practice of confession has dropped tremendously among Catholics.  It is a real tragedy.  That means that so many Catholics have dirty souls, or dead souls, have stained or even lost the treasure of grace they have received at baptism, and they don¡¯t care.  So many Catholics, and I pray that this does not apply to you, are more concerned about their car than about their soul!  If there is some dirt on their car, if the shine is gone, oh! they are very quick to go to a car wash, to have it polished!  But, for the dirt on their soul?  They can spend years without ever going to confession!  What a pity!

Second point, how often should we go to confession?
If confession is compared to washing our bodies, we can continue the comparison: how often should you wash your body?  What do you teach to your children?  What did we learn from our parents? There is the regular, daily cleaning of our body, and there are other times when we get really dirty, after some gardening, for example, or some sport, and so on.  It is the same for our soul.  There is no need to go to confession for every little venial sin, although we can confess them too in confession. For these, we can do a perfect act of contrition, a sign of the cross with holy water, or kiss a crucifix, these actions suffice, they  wash away the little sins.  But if there are mortal sins, then we must go to confession. In confession we must confess each and every mortal sin that we committed since our last confession, and any circumstance that can change the nature of the sin.  For example, to steal, is a sin against the 7th commandment, but to steal in a church is a double sin: against the 7th and against the 1st, a sacrilege also, since that money was given to God.

The Church has made a commandment that we must all go to confession at the very least once a year.  This is really a bare survival minimum!  A good frequency for Catholics who take their religion seriously is to go once every 1or 2 months.  More fervent Catholics go every 1 or 2 weeks,  they might only have little sins, but, they want to keep their soul ¡®shining¡¯ for God, just like you may want to keep your car shining and polish it frequently!
There are many advantages to go to confession frequently, at least once a month.  First of all, it makes it much easier to remember our sins!  If you go every 3 or 4 months, or less frequently, once or twice a year, it is going to be hard to remember all your thoughts, words, looks, actions, omissions of that long period!  Secondly, confession washes sins but also gives many graces to avoid the same sins.  So frequent confession will help you to fight your bad tendencies, and commit fewer sins, you will notice that you will be sinning less frequently. I have seen real miracles of conversion on that point.
.
Thirdly, it will make the practice of virtue easier.  It is easier to be good when God is in your soul! And fourthly, it will make your communions more fervent, more fruitful.  All the saints had the practice of frequent confession, because they wanted to grow in the love of God.  A husband loves to see his wife well dressed and looking good, how much more does God love to see his children clean of sin of ornate with all kinds of virtues!
Finally, a short word about going to confession to priests who do not speak the beautiful Korean language!

I am fully aware of the difficulty that exists here, the result of many priests taking turns to bring you the Holy Mass, and of Fr. Onoda, now being in charge of the large parish of Manila, with more than 500 people.  I pray that one day, with two permanent priests who will speak Korean, we will overcome this difficulty.

We must use the technique of the confession sheet. We do that also in other countries, like India, and China, and Sri Lanka.  But remember that it is also possible to have an interpreter.  Sometimes in confession, either the penitent, you, or sometimes the priest, need to ask questions about some sins or some moral issues.  The Church allows us to have an interpreter.  We always make that available in the countries where we do not know the language.

In the meanwhile, remember that there are 3 parts to the confession: 1) the contrition, that is, the sorrow for your sins, then, 2) the actual confession, that is, the telling of your sins to the priest, and finally, 3) the satisfaction, that is the penance that the priest gives us in confession.  The most important is the first one, the contrition, the sorrow for our sins. Sometimes we cannot find a priest to hear our confession, in that case, a perfect act of contrition is enough until we do find a priest; and sometimes, it is impossible to make satisfaction, for example, someone who confesses on his death bed that he stole something, and has no more time to make restitution. If he is truly sorry, God will forgive him.  That is the story of the Good thief. But we can never obtain the mercy of God if we are not sorry for our sins.

So, when you come with your confession sheet to confession, remember that the most important is the internal sorrow for your sins.  I am afraid some of you come to confession with your list, like with a shopping list!  Always prepare yourself well, and make sure that you do have that deep sorrow for having offended God, for having stained or loss the grace of your baptism, and perhaps deserved the pains of hell.  I also think some of you do not know the act of contrition that we are supposed to say after telling our sins to the priest.  This is a basic Catholic prayer that every Catholic must know!  The act of contrition.  Please learn it by heart if you do not know it. Parents should check if their children know it.

So, my dear faithful, let us examine ourselves: when was the last time you went to confession? If it is more than 2-3 months, you are due for a ¡¯car-wash¡¯, a good ¡®polishing¡¯ of your soul.  Especially if you are doing  he first Saturday devotion, remember that monthly confession is a condition to gain the graces promised by Our Lady.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
