동성애 경향을 막는 것은 불공정하다 ??
Q 동성애하는 남녀들은 자기들의 본성에 따라 하는 것을 못하게 막는 것은 천주님이 불공정하다고 합니다. 그들에게 있어서 동성애는 '자기들의 의지에 반하여 그 욕망을 억제하는 것은 자연법에 어긋난다'고 하는데 이 주장에 대해 올바른 접근법은 무엇입니까?
A 이와 같은 주장이라면, 도둑, 주정뱅이 그리고 다른 악행을 저지르는 자도 “우리의 본성을 따라 하는 것을 못하게 막는 것은 천주님이 공정하지 못하다”라고 주장할 것입니다. 거짓이라는 점은 인간의 본성이 이러한 무질서한 행위에 대해서 ‘자연적으로 타고난 경향’이다 하는 체하는 것입니다. 절대 아닙니다. 설령 그것이 도독, 주정뱅이, 동성애….또는 심지어 사음(邪淫 –미혼 사이에서)과 간통(姦通-기혼자 사이에서)이던 간에 악에 대해 타고난 경향이란 없습니다.
저들은 이러한 경향이 많은 이들, 대부분 그리고 심지어 모든 이들(성모님은 배제하면서)한테서 찾을 수 있다고 주장합니다. 그에 대답은 악에 끌리는 경향이 본성에서 나오는 것이 아니라, 오히려 원죄의 상처 (그리고 개인이 저지르는 죄는 이 같은 ’상처’, 악에 기우는 성향을 키우는 것)로 부터 나옵니다.
이에 대한 간단한 증거는 다음과 같이 이해하면 쉽습니다. 인간 본성에 대한 가장 적절한 사항은 인간이 ‘이성’을 갖고 태어난 ‘이성적 동물’이라는 것입니다. 그러므로 이성의 빛으로 우리의 욕망을 통제하지 못하는 것은 인간의 본성에 어긋나는 것입니다. 높은 차원의 기능이 저급한 차원의 기능을 섬기는 것은 비이성적입니다. 우리의 이성은 분명히 우리의 감각보다는 우위에 있기 때문에, 영적인 선익보다는 육체적 쾌락에 인간의 궁극적인 목적을 두는 것은 비이성적입니다. 십계명은 우리의 이성으로써 모든 인간에 대해 묶어서 쉽사리 이해될 수 있는 요구사항이기 때문에 십계명은 자연법의 교훈에 해당됩니다.

A With such arguments, thieves, drunkards, and any other vicious person would claim that it is “unfair to forbid them from following their nature…” What is false is precisely to pretend that our human nature is “naturally inclined” to such disorderly actions! No, there is NO natural inclination to vice, whether it be theft, drunkedness, homosexuality… or even fornication and adulteries! Such inclinations are VICIOUS, not natural.
They would then argue that such inclination is found in many, most and even all (excluding our Lady). The answer is precisely: inclination to evil is NOT from nature, but rather from the wounds of original sin (and personal sins only increase such “wound”, such evil inclination).
The simple proof of this is easy to understand: the very proper of human nature is to be “a reasonable animal”, an animal endowed with REASON. It is therefore AGAINST HUMAN NATURE not to control our appetites by the light of our reason; it is unreasonable for the higher faculties to SERVE the lower faculties; it is unreasonable to put one’s ultimate end and pleasures in the goods of the body rather than the spiritual goods, precisely because our reason is ABOVE our senses. The Ten Commandments are precepts of the NATURAL Law, precisely because they are requirements that our REASON easily grasps as binding on all humans.
