Some Stories Concerning Adam and Eve

Q1 ¡°Why did God put the tree of knowledge of good and evil right where Adam and Eve could see it but then said, they cannot eat the fruits? Why did God tempt them so?¡±

A1 ¡°God is not a tempter of evils, and he tempteth no man¡± (Jac. 1:13). God did not ¡°tempt¡± Adam and Eve, but FOR THEIR OWN GOOD wanted that there be in the Garden of Eden a reminder of their dependence upon God; such was that test of obedience. They had so many good trees, so many beautiful things to contemplate and discover, there was NO EVIL inclination in them; it is of their own fault that they listened to the Devil and started to desire to break the Command of God. God had said: ¡°Of every tree of paradise thou shalt eat: but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat. For in what day soever thou shalt eat of it, thou shalt die the death¡± (Gen. 2:16-17). That was very clear.

So when the devil asked: ¡°Why hath God commanded you, that you should not eat of every tree of paradise?¡± (Gen. 3:1), Eve should have immediately recognised the UNDERLYING LIE behind the question: it is like if you ask a faithful woman: ¡°Why have you been unfaithful to your husband?¡± Such question presupposes a lie, thus manifesting the ¡°father of lies¡±, who is a liar ¡°from the beginning¡± (see Jn. 8:44), and she should have refused to discuss with him. But she thought she would be smarter¡¦ Yet she responded with weakness: ¡°Of the fruit of the trees that are in paradise we do eat: but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of paradise, God hath commanded us that we should not eat; and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we die¡± (Gen. 3:2-3). Note the PERHAPS. God did not say ¡°perhaps¡±, but rather a very clear ¡°dying you shall die!¡±
Then the Devil was even more manifestly a liar, and where God had said: ¡°Dying you shall die¡±, he said: ¡°No, you shall not die the death¡± (Gen. 3:4). One can hardly go more clearly against God¡¯s word. The BIG fault of Eve was to have listened to such lie. Once it is so clear that the Devil is a liar, one must NOT discuss any more!

So, God can certainly not be blamed for ¡°putting that tree¡± where Adam and Eve could see it. But Adam and Eve bear the full responsibility for their action¡¦ and all its consequences upon mankind!
But thanks be to God, He sent His only begotten Son, who came to repair the damages of the first Adam.

Q2 ¡°the Devil didn't actually lie... They didn't die.¡±

A2 false! They did die, twice! They died of the bodily death after some 900 years, but they did die right away of the worst death, the death of the soul, which happens at the time one commits a mortal sin. Indeed there are two lives, two births, two deaths, two foods, two medicine¡¦ There is the life of the body and the life of the soul; the birth of the body from our mother¡¯s womb, the birth of the soul from the water and the Holy Ghost; the death of the body, and the death of the soul by mortal sin; the food of the body and the Holy Eucharist; the medicine of the body, and Holy Confession; the resurrection of the body (at the end of the world) and the resurrection of the soul (in Confession if one was in mortal sin).

The life of the body is its union with the soul; the life of the soul is its union with God by Charity, which is ¡°the bond of perfection¡± (Col. 3:14). As the death of the body means decomposition and rot for the body, not for the soul; so death of the soul by sin is the greatest damage to our soul. Now the same bodily death separates the just from Heaven, and the wicked from Hell: the main difference is that one lives of the life of the soul by sanctifying grace (which after the death of the body is perfected into beatific vision, everlasting life), and the other is spiritually dead! The same death can make one pass to Heaven¡¦ or Hell. So the death of the body is not so much to be feared: but the death of the soul is the great evil that one must avoid at ANY cost, even the cost of one¡¯s life (life Abel).

Q3  ¡°Why didn't Adam say anything while all these were going on? He was there all the time. Wasn't he supposed to protect the wife?¡±

A3  Yes, indeed, and precisely in this he sinned, failing to his duty, being a follower in evil rather than a leader in good, which is the proper vocation of men.

Q4 ¡°they [Adam and Eve] are in heaven now.... right?¡±

A4 it is the common opinion of the Fathers that Adam (and Eve?) have been redeemed ¡¦ by the New Adam (and the New Eve), i.e. by our Lord Jesus Christ (through Mary)! They did penance for their sin¡¦ more than 900 years of penance! They did offer sacrifices (prefiguring the perfect Sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ) as this can be seen in their very children Abel (and Cain) to whom they taught this holy practice.

After their death they may have had to pass through Purgatory for a while too, and they waited in the ¡°Limbo of the Fathers¡±, i.e. of the patriarchs of the Old Testament – which is different from the Limbo of the unbaptised infants: the ¡°Limbo of the Fathers¡± was a temporary place, waiting for the our Lord Jesus Christ to complete His Sacrifice and then it was emptied and all these Fathers went to Heaven, accompanying the Risen Christ. All these ¡°Fathers¡± had the faith in the Saviour to come, and lived according to the Commandments (at least doing penance for their previous sins).
The Limbo of the infants is a permanent place, where they do not have sanctifying grace, neither faith, nor charity.

Q5 ¡°I think it is ironic that Eve was called Eve 'because she is the mother of the living'. They were walking dead by then... and so is each and every one of us.¡±

A5 very true! Yet do not forget the parallel between the first Adam and the New Adam, the first Eve and the New Eve. As Christ repaired the damage of the first Adam, so did the Blessed Virgin Mary repair the damage of the first Eve: the New Eve is truly worthy to be called ¡°the Mother of the Living¡±!
