The Cause of  the Misery and Starvation

Q  What becomes of God when you think of the misery and starvation in the world?

A  All sufferings of this world have NO other solution precisely than a Good God, capable to draw good out of evil. If one rejects God, that does not give him any solution... at all, but rather leaves him in complete despair because he has absolutely nobody to turn to!

The problem with this temptation is that we are tempted to judge God. We mean: if God would be so good, why does He not stop all these sufferings? And we say this ¡°why¡± not trying to LEARN FROM HIM, but rather in a condemning manner – we often mean: he is not good, because He lets these sufferings. This is foolishness on our part, because by saying such blasphemy, (because it is indeed a blasphemy!) we do not help at all solving the sufferings of those who suffer: we blame God¡¦ rather than blaming ourselves.

The truth is that ALL sufferings are the consequences of sin, either our own sins, or the sins of others. Indeed sometimes some suffer from the sins of others: there is ample evidence of that. And God is not to be blamed for that, but those who make others suffer are those to be blamed!

The GREAT TRUTH that we must meditate is that God gives more to some and less to others SO THAT THOSE WHO HAVE MORE MAY GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE LESS, and so that those who have less may show gratitude to those who have more: so that CHARITY may reign among all of us! This is a beautiful purpose, and man has only himself to blame if he does not enter into that plan of God!

Hence those who are healthy must care for the sick; those who are rich must give to the poor; those who are strong must protect the weak; those who are more educated must teach the less educated; etc.

It is man¡¯s perversion that makes that many rich use the power of their riches to become even more rich at the expense of the poor; those who are strong use their strength to do violence on the weak; those who are more educated despise the less educated and lie to them, etc. The epitome of this evil is abortion, since who is poorer, weaker, less educated than a little child in the womb, and he is despised, tortured and killed for money by the abortionist and company!

Modern man wants to be free, and God does not prevent them to abuse their freedom to do such evil. And after that, men would blame God ¡¦ for not stopping these abuses of freedom!
Who does not see that the wickedness is on man¡¯s part, not on God¡¯s!

However, second question: Where is the justice of God, in permitting this uneven distribution?
It is important to understand that no man has first given to God, to the point that God would OWE him something! God is the first cause of all good, and therefore He owes us NOTHING! When he requires merits, He is the one Who gives His grace in the first place, by which we are enabled to merit, so that, ¡°by crowning our merits, He crowns his own gifts¡± (his graces) as St Augustine says.
We are the ones who owe everything good that we have to Him, and who therefore should worship Him and obey His Commandments! We are duty bound to do that; we owe that to Him.

When someone suffers, either he has some debt to God (due to his past sins), and then he should first consider his sufferings as a merciful occasion to make reparation in this world, so as to be spared in the next!

Secondly sufferings has a great ¡°teaching¡± value: it teaches us that perfect happiness is not to be searched in this world, in material and sensible things, but rather in Heaven, in the spiritual and eternal goods; it also teaches to renounce ourselves, to carry our Cross and follow Christ. It teaches us humility, patience, etc. as St James says: ¡°My brethren, count it all joy, when you shall fall into divers temptations; Knowing that the trying of your faith worketh patience. And patience hath a perfect work; that you may be perfect and entire, failing in nothing¡± (Jac. 1:2-4).

If one has done enough reparation for his past sins (which is possible, according to St Thomas, yet it is usually only the lot of the great Saints), then sufferings become the ¡°suffering of an innocent¡± which has a most marvellous value as is manifest in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, or the sufferings of our Lady at the foot of the Cross.

PRECISELY BECAUSE GOD IS JUST, He would not let the innocent suffer without giving an overwhelming compensation: the Redemption of the world to His Son¡¯s sufferings, to be come to Co-Redemptrix to our Lady, etc. See St Thérèse of the Child Jesus¡¯ sufferings and how many souls she helped saving that way! So in all things we ought to have Faith in God and trust in His goodness.

Yours sincerely in Jesus and Mary,
 Father François Laisney
