참된 순명

질문 "그대들은 교회를 거슬러 무슨 일을 하려는 거요? 그대들보다 위에 임명된 이들에게 순명하는 겁니까? 순명이 덕행 아닙니까?"

답변 순명에 관한 인용은 열왕기(列王記)에서 사울 왕의 불순명을 꾸짖는 사무엘기에 나옵니다: “사무엘이 이르되, 야훼께서 번제와 다른 제사를 그의 목소리를 청종(聽從)하는 것을 좋아하심과 같이 좋아하시겠나이까?”(사무엘 전15:22)

 여기에다가, 전도서에 나오는 한 구절을 찾아봅니다: “야훼의 집에 들어갈 적에 너희 발을 조심하여 가까이 듣고자 하여라. 어리석은 이의 제사보다 순명이 나으니, 어리석은 이는 저들이 행하는 악을 알지 못하니라.”(전도서4:17) 그러나 여기서 우리가 먼저 주목해야할 것은 (사울에게 내린) 천주님의 계명을, 또는 천주님의 말씀 (전도서)을 다루는 것이라는 점을 주목해야 합니다. 

 성 베드로가 산헤드린 사람들에게 하신 이 말씀은 반드시 명심해야 합니다: “베드로와 다른 종도들이 대답하여 이르되, 사람에게 보다 더욱 천주께 마땅히 순명할지니,”(종도행전5:29) 산헤드린은 종도들이 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 설교하지 말라고 명령합니다. (우리 주님은 천주이시며 저들을 명령하신 분이셨습니다: “가서, 온 나라를 가르치고...마테오28:19) 

 그래서 성 토마스 아퀴나스는 이 가르침을 신학대전에서 두 가지 간단하고 분명한 글로 요약합니다:

대답: 그렇다.
5항: ”아랫사람은 저들의 장상(고위 성직자)들에게 모든 일에 있어서 순명해야 하는가?

대답: 아니다! 순명이란 ‘덕행’인즉, 순명은 결핍(불순명: 합법적인 명령을 따르지 않는 것)과 과잉(굴종: 불법적인 명령에 맹목적으로 따르는 것, 압살롬이 노예들에게 형제들을 죽이라고 한 것) 사이에 있는 올바른 정도(正道)입니다. 

 성 토마스 아퀴나스는 성 베드로의 말씀을 분명히 언급 합니다: “사람보다는 천주님의 말씀에 순명해야 한다”(종도행전5:29) 때때로 장상들에 의해 명령되어지는 것은 천주님을 거스르는 것입니다. 그러므로 장상들이 모든 일에 있어서 천주님을 따르는 것이 아닙니다.

 그러므로 심지어 교회 장상 (고위 성직자)들이 때때로 자신의 의무를 충직하게 이행하지 못할 때, 그리고 천주님의 계명에 거스르는 것을 행할 때는 그들을 따라서는 안 됩니다. 

 예를 들어 부니니가.... 그가 성직자 예부성성 장관으로 있을 적에, 전 세계 모든 주교들에게 편지를 보내어, 만약 사제들이 75세가 넘었거나, 오직 한명의 복사가 있는 경우에만 빼고는 전통 미사를 드리지 못하게 하였습니다. 

 이와 같은 그의 편지는 교회의 아주 오랜 전통과 교황 성 비오5세의 칙서 Quo Primum을 거스르는 것입니다. 베네틱토 16세는 부그니가 없애려했던 것....지극히 거룩하고도 신성한 보물을 교회가 수세기 동안 지켜온 것들이 금지되어서는 안 된다고 말씀을 잘하셨습니다. 그의 지위가 무엇이던 간에 (그가 교황일지라도) 그의 명령은 불법이고 따라서 이를 따라서는 안 되는 것입니다. 이것을 따르는 것은 굴종이라는 악이지, 합법적인 명령을 따르는 순명의 덕행이 아닙니다.

True Obedience

Q  What are you doing going against the Church? Are you not disobeying those who have been appointed above you? Isn’t obedience a virtue also?

A  “The quote on obedience is from the book of kings, Samuel rebuking king Saul’s disobedience: “Samuel said: Doth the Lord desire holocausts and victims, and not rather that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifices: and to hearken rather than to offer the fat of rams” (1Sa 15:22). To this, one can add the following from the Ecclesiastes: “Keep thy foot, when thou goest into the house of God, and draw nigh to hear. For much better is obedience, than the victims of fools, who know not what evil they do” (Ecc 4:17). But one ought to notice first that it deals here with obedience to God’s command (to Saul), or to God’s word (Eccle.) This must be read keeping in mind what St Peter said to the Sanhedrin: “Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men” (Acts 5:29). The Sanhedrin was commanding the Apostles NOT to preach in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: their command was opposed to the command of God (our Lord, Who IS God, had commanded them: “Go, teach all  nations…” Mt. 28:19) Hence St Thomas summarises this teaching in two very simple and clear articles of the Summa: IIa IIae qu. 104 a. 4: “Whether God must be obeyed in all things?” Answer: Yes! Article 5: “Whether subjects are bound to obey their superiors [praelatis = prelates] in all things?” Answer: No! Obedience is a “moral virtue”, i.e. one that consists in the right measure between a default (disobedience: not to comply with legitimate orders) and excess (servility: to execute illegitimate orders, such as the order of Absalom to his slaves to kill his brother). St Thomas explicitly refers to St Peter’s words: “It is written (Acts 5:29): “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Now sometimes the things commanded by a superior are against God. Therefore superiors are not to be obeyed in all things.”

So even ecclesiastical superiors sometimes should be resisted when they are unfaithful to their duties, and command something against God. For example when in 1975 Bugnini, who was then secretary to the congregation for the divine worship, sent a letter to all the bishops of the world to the effect that priests were not allowed to offer the Traditional Mass except if they would be above 75 and would have only one servant: such letter was against the immemorial tradition of the Church and against the Papal bull of Pope St Pius V Quo Primum. Pope Benedict XVI said very well that what the Church had held for her most holy and sacred treasure for centuries and centuries COULD NOT be forbidden, as Bugnini was trying to do. No matter what was his position, his order was illegitimate and should not be obeyed. It is the VICE of servility, not the virtue of obedience, to go along such illegitimate orders.
