 Religious Fundamentalism

Q What is ¡°Religious fundamentalism¡±?

A ¡°If one defines it as ¡°the interpretation of every word in the sacred texts as literal truth¡±, it is quite clear that one ought to distinguish which ¡°sacred text¡±. If it is a text of a false religion, such as the Koran, then such fundamentalism leads to frightful consequences, as can be seen with ISIS.

If it is the right text, the Bible (Catholic), then the Church herself teaches as a dogma of Faith the ¡°inerrancy of the Bible, i.e. that there are NO ERROR in the Bible. That requires that one has the proper understanding of what is the ¡°literal meaning¡± of the text: the ¡°Guardian¡± of this is precisely the Catholic Church. She refers one to the interpretation of the Fathers; and the Magisterium is the ultimate judge (in ¡°ex cathedra¡± definitions) when there is a dispute as to the meaning of the text. Hence one sees immediately the problem with ¡°Protestant fundamentalism¡±: they are attached not so much to the bible itself, but to their own personal interpretation which supersedes for them the interpretation of the Catholic Church. And that leads them to all kinds of errors, and moral attitudes which the Pope denounces here (e.g. the tendency to condemn everybody that does not agree with them, contrary to what our Lord Jesus Christ said: ¡°I came not to judge/condemn but to save¡± Lk. 9:56).

Given that the Church herself teaches the inerrancy of the Scriptures, one can safely affirm that, with the above definition of ¡°fundamentalism¡±, every good Catholic should be ¡°fundamental¡±! But with the proper Catholic approach, which includes humility in front of the Inspired Text, not trusting one¡¯s own personal interpretation, and charity that desires the conversion of the neighbour and not his condemnation – so far as to be willing to die for the conversion of others! That is clearly the opposite of Muslim fundamentalism!!! In that sense, Catholic charity inclines one to ¡°accompany¡± the sinner in his conversion process, even if it is a long process, patiently helping him all the way¡¦ back to God, to our Lord Jesus Christ.
