Exorcism

Q  In traditional Catholicism, is it possible for lay Catholics to perform exorcism of a possessed person without using the official rite when the priest not available? I know only authorised priest can perform the solemn rite of Exorcism. But just in case of very urgent necessity when it is impossible to get a priest, is there any prayer or invocations that a layperson can say when confronting a possessed person?

A  ¡°An exorcism is, strictly speaking, a command to the devil to depart. At such, no lay person can perform an exorcism: only those who have received the order of exorcist, and even then within the proper exercise of their functions: for instance, some exorcisms are included in the (traditional) rite of Baptism, or in some blessings (Holy Water), which every priest can perform; other exorcisms, such as the ¡°big exorcism¡± can only be done with special permission from the bishop. Otherwise it is a ¡°bound power¡±, i.e. restricted by church law. It is like using big military equipment in war: even if an officer has the know-how to use it, its use is still restricted by the higher commander.

Lay folk do not have that power. To understand this, consider in a family what would you think if the little child would try to command to his big-wayward brother! That one would just laugh at him no end! Now the devil is like a big brother, brother because he was created by God too and in the state of grace (as the common teaching of the church says), and he is now in full revolt against the Heavenly Father. Now humans are like little brothers, very little indeed: unless they have been invested with power from on high (by Holy Orders, participating in the power of our Lord Jesus Christ), their pretend to command to the devil would just be laughed at by him and useless. The Devil might even try to use that pride in the man to lead him astray!

On the contrary, the humility to acknowledge that one has no power to command to the Devil, and thus turns in PRAYER to God, to our Lord Jesus Christ, is the most secure way for lay person to resist the devil. Thus PRAYER to God, asking Him to deliver us, is fully permitted to laymen, but no ¡°exorcism¡±, i.e. command to the devil.
