           Meatless Friday

Q Is it a sin to eat meat on Friday? Because I thought it is just a disciplinary matter. I remembered it was Friday today but then I attended a function and I totally forgot about it during lunch and because I already breached it anyway, I continued eating…

A “The laws of the Church do oblige in conscience, including the law of abstinence on Fridays! So, yes, it is a sin to eat meat on Friday. There can be “parvity of matter”: indeed for a mortal sin, there is need to have a grave matter: a small portion (a bite) would not be a grave matter (like stealing one ringgit) but if you add one ringgit to another, then after a while you will pass over the limit and reach grave matter!!! So it is for the abstinence law: if you eat a full steak, and continue eating: there is grave matter. Now in recent years, they said that it could be replaced by another penance, and people just remembered they were no longer obliged: this is NOT true: if they eat meat, unless they do some other REAL penance, they do disobey the law.

So two consequences: 1/ if you start eating meat be complete inadvertence, then remember it is Friday: STOP eating meat. It was not yet a mortal sin (because there is need of “full knowledge and full consent”); but if, once aware of it, you continue, then there is sin!
2/ My advice is to keep the old law, and continue to abstain from meat on Friday. but in case you really forgot, then DO a real other penance (without continuing eating meat).

Disciplinary laws are real laws, they oblige in conscience. Disobedience IS a sin! Those who taught that “disciplinary laws” were not obliging under sin did not teach the truth. Some laws oblige under venial sin (e.g. individual religious rules, though the rejection of ALL the rules would be against the vow and thus a mortal sin). Some other laws oblige under mortal sin!
