Baptism for  Children of Homosexual Couples?

Q  Father, what about children of homosexuals¡¦ nowadays, since they want EVERYBODY to recognise their ¡®marriage¡¯ and their ¡®right¡¯ to have children¡¦ and they would go to the Church asking for baptism for the children they adopted. If the Church refused, they would say they are being discriminated against. What is more important is salvation of soul, and in this case, the soul of the child.

A  ¡°If homosexuals ask for baptism of their ¡°children¡±, there is a double problem there:
1.they are not ¡°their¡± children, of course! At most adopted (and even then, this is not a proper adoption, because it is not a true ¡°family¡±)

2.there is the scandal of their situation, which renders incapable to raise children in the proper Catholic way,

3.there is the danger of abuse of the child, which is much greater with homosexual parents.

For these three reasons, apart from the danger of death, I would refuse, and wait for the child to be independent from such parents (at least sufficiently able to make decisions for themselves, i.e. around 13/14). Our Lord has said: ¡°Give not that which is holy to dogs; neither cast ye your pearls before swine¡± (Mt. 7:6). These are the words of our Lord!

That does not mean that the Church would abandon those children: they may come to Catechism, to Mass, etc. But their ¡°parents¡± MUST separate, and straighten their lives! Then one of them may take care of the child, and he may be baptised.

People think it is difficult to come out of such vice; but I just read yesterday from St John Chrysostom, who strongly fought against the default of his people, that it is in fact rather simple¡¦ AND FAST. He takes the example of Nineveh, which in only three days passed from a state of such depravity that God had decreed the utter destruction of their city, like Sodom, to full compliance with God¡¯s Law and forgiveness: ¡°God saw their works, that they were turned from their evil way: and God had mercy¡± (Jon 3:1). In only three days! If the fear of temporal utter destruction can succeed in changing their wicked lives to such a point, how much more, says St John Chrysostom, should the fear of everlasting punishment in Hell change the evil ways of the sinners! But they don¡¯t believe in it. Then, like Sodom, it will fall upon them suddenly and frightfully! ¡°It is a frightful thing [horrendum est: a horror – a horrible thing] to fall in the hands of the living God¡± (Heb. 10:31).

It is very useful meditation to stop and think: ¡°If I die now, I¡¯ll go to Hell.¡± This can really help to change one¡¯s life. This is the very purpose for which God revealed its existence, so that we would not be caught unaware and we would correct ourselves. St Augustine makes this comparison: the hunter who wants to catch his prey does not give any warning but shoots straight; the enemy who wants to kill does not give any warning; but it is the mother who warns the child: don¡¯t do this or I will spank you. Why does she warn if not that she does not want the child to be hurt? She wants him to do the right thing. So does God.

This is the meditation for all those who live in mortal sin: whether homosexuals, fornicators, adulterers, thieves, drug addicts, etc. They do need to think hard like the people Nineveh, and convert.

Fr Stehlin¡¯s take on the question:
¡°This is a very difficult case, as they are not only living in mortal sin, but in a state which destroys even the natural order and makes even the natural education of the child impossible.
Therefore the only possibility would be to allow their children (coming from a previous non-gay copulation) to be educated by Catholics.

Your last question: if the child is in danger of death, it should be baptised independently on the situation of their parents.
