What Vows do SSPX Priests take?

A  ¡°The SSPX is a ¡°Society of common life without vows¡±: it is a class ¡°annexed¡± to the religious in the Canon Law.

Q  We are a ¡°society of common life without vows¡±. So as such, we do not take the ¡°three vows¡±. Archbishop Lefebvre wanted that, because of his missionary experience: priests in missions are often far from their superiors and must make decisions with money without the ability to ask for permissions; hence the practice of the vow of poverty becomes very difficult in missions.

However it is evident that we all take the vow of chastity at the subdeaconate. We do ¡°promises of obedience¡±, in the form of an ¡°oblation¡±. Now these are not little things. Indeed Archbishop Lefebvre always insisted on our duty to observe the three evangelical counsels, even if we do not make a vow of them; in fact, we are MORE BOUND by our ordination as priests, to observe these three evangelical counsels than monks are bound by their vows. Indeed the priest, by offering the Sacrifice of our Lord, is bound ¡°to imitate what he offers¡±, as the Pontifical says (¡°imitamini quod tractatis¡±), and there is no one more poor, more detached from pleasures and more obedient than our Lord Jesus Christ crucified!!!

If there is no such (three vows) taken by SSPX priests, but ¡°only bounded to observe¡±; only means to me anytime any priests can break any one of the supposedly three vows without facing grave consequences; since there were no vows made.

¡°Only¡± does not mean one may break it AT ALL. One should never do evil. Only means comparatively with something different: there can be different ¡°contracts¡±, different ¡°moral bonds¡±: monks are ¡°bound¡± by their vows; priests are ¡°bound¡± by the obligation of their state, and my point is precisely that these priestly bonds are STRICTER than the vows. When I say ¡°only¡±, it means that instead of having two bonds, we ¡°only¡± have the stricter ones, the bond of the ordination (religious priests have both bonds). Priests are NOT ALLOWED to fail to their duties, including to their duties of observing the evangelical counsels.
