           Submission to the Pope

Q Pope Leo XIII wrote: ¡°It is an absolute necessity for the simple faithful to submit in mind and heart to their own pastors, and for the latter to submit with them to the Head and Supreme Pastor (the Pope)¡±. How does that apply today?

A ¡°One needs to understand the Law: the Law sets general rules, which are good, but must be applied in the light of Faith, wisely, and not blindly and foolishly. Thus in the Holy Gospel, our Lord Jesus Christ says of the Pharisees: ¡°The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses. All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not; for they say, and do not¡± (Mt. 23:2-3). Yet when no less than ¡°the high priest [said]: Commanding we commanded you, that you should not teach in this name; and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine¡¦ But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men¡± (Acts 5:27-29).

Was St Peter against our Lord, who had said that he should do what they said? Not at all. Why so? The answer was precisely in the epistle of last Sunday: ¡°Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ, and the dispensers of the mysteries of God. Here now it is required among the dispensers, that a man be found faithful¡± (1 Cor. 4:1-2). This is the solution: if the churchmen are FAITHFUL to their mission, THEN ¡°it is an absolute necessity for the simple faithful to submit in mind and heart to their own pastors, and for the latter to submit with them to the Head and Supreme Pastor (the Pope)¡±. But if they are NOT faithful, then ¡°one ought to obey God rather than men.¡±

A parallel with parents makes it very easy to understand. Children ought to obey their parents; this is the Law of God, the fourth Commandment. But in some countries some bad parents SELL their children to prostitution! In such a case, it is EVIDENT that children ought NOT to obey, they ought to resist even to the point of death (like many holy virgins in the martyrology). Those who thus resist are NOT really ¡°disobedient¡±, because obedience is a moral virtue that consist in the RIGHT MEASURE between a default (disobedience to legitimate orders) and an excess (servility: complying with illegitimate orders).

Similarly today, those who depart from tradition, introducing communion in the hand, even for divorced and remarried, etc., are NOT really obedient, though they comply with some churchmen¡¯s guidance: this is rather the sin by excess, servility. And those who remain faithful to tradition in spite of pressures by churchmen are REALLY OBEDIENT, because they respect the ¡°right measure¡± of the virtue of obedience, obeying God rather than men.

"If the Holy Spirit is really guiding it and God really wants this, then these splits should not have happened." The SSPX does not claim "guidance from the Holy Ghost": our position is a simple position of FIDELITY: fidelity to the faith of all times (we do not accept novelties in opposition with previously constant teaching), fidelity to the liturgy of handed down from ancient times (we do not accept novelties introduced with the help of six protestant ministers, such as the Novus Ordo), fidelity to the morals of the Saints (we do not accept the new morals of situation, relativism, etc.). But because we live in a situation of crisis, it is not surprising that there are forces that tend to disrupt our work: either compromise with the novelties (FSP), or hardening and leaving the Church (sedevacantism). That fidelity remains good, in spite of the fact that some people do not follow the same rule. Cleophas said quite well:

to say that "if the Holy Ghost guides it then there will be no split" is quite wrong coz if we were to use the same logic, then the catholic church is also not guided by the Holy Ghost since there are many schisms and heresies for the past 2000 years
