How to overcome distractions in prayer?

A  There are two kinds of distractions: the first kind is those distractions that are accepted, and knowingly one continues with a train of thought far from prayer when he is conscious that it is prayer time. That kind of distraction is not good, and one must absolutely fight against it (though it is only venial sin, it is deliberate venial sin, and those are very damaging for the soul). If it happens, one must make some reparation for it, by either restarting one¡¯s prayer, or by adding other prayers, or other acts of penance¡¦

The second kind is the non-wilful distraction, that comes in spite of the good-will to pray, and is due either to things that have deeply touched us recently, and thus naturally come back to mind, or simply due to the frailty of our nature. These distractions – though in themselves not good, because it is always better to be attentive to our prayers! – yet they can be profitable spiritually to us, when we draw good out of evil, by humbling ourselves for these (small) failures, and beg more God¡¯s help, and increase our desire to pray well (then there remains the ¡°attention of the heart¡± in spite of the distraction of the mind). There may be periods when God allows more of these distractions to plague us – periods of trial, ¡°desolation¡± – and other periods when God in His goodness so draws our mind to Him that we have very little of them (periods of ¡°consolations¡±). And these periods alternate, as per Divine Providence, and we should not be upset when we go through these desolations, faithfully using them to humble ourselves.

In order to prevent such distractions and help us to pray better, it is always profitable to prepare oneself to prayer. Indeed, the Scriptures say: ¡°Before prayer prepare thy soul: and be not as a man that tempteth God¡± (Eccli. 18:23) There is long-term preparation and short-term preparation. The long-term preparation is good spiritual reading, that fills the mind with good and holy thoughts, that will naturally come back to mind in prayer – also long-term preparation does include avoiding that which could lead to distraction: thus avoiding videos, TV, etc. The short-term preparation consists in a very short prayer at the beginning of every prayer, asking precisely that God helps us to pray well!
