¡°a friend of mine, a Protestant, asked me about Reformation in Europe. I know that Reformation occur partly bcoz of opposition of certain Church's customs at that time. My friend also mentioned about the selling of the Indulgence at that time which is opposed by Martin Luther (and many other Catholic doctrines). How can a Catholic answer to this? Can I just admit that at that time, the Catholic church is in corrupted state that causes the selling of Indulgence to happen?¡±

Answer: Donatus has answered Aelius very well, that the presences of the Judases among the Apostles and their successors do not diminish the holiness of the Church, which comes from her Founder and Head, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Concerning indulgences, one must consider two things:

1/ that IN ITSELF, when properly understood, the Indulgences are a very good thing; it is the ABUSE thereof which is bad; Luther threw away the baby with the dirty water! He rejected not only the abuse but the very thing itself. And in this, he was wrong.

2/ Historically, there were many good Catholics such as Cardinal Cajetan, who at the time of Luther were also fighting against the abuses of indulgences. The Council of Trent itself gave regulations that practically suppressed this abuse (for the most part). So there was no need to rebel against the Church herself and leave her in order to correct these abuses.

3/ One should add that the core of the rebellion of Luther is not so much on the matter of the indulgences, but rather on a NEW NOTION OF JUSTIFICATION, ¡°extrinsic justification¡± by a mere ¡°declaration¡± by God while the person itself would remain wholly corrupt.

This is NOT the Gospel, this is NOT proper Christian doctrine, and this is the main reason why the Church condemned his doctrine. Luther rejected good works, as if the Church had taught that our good works CAUSED our justification. This is again false. The Church teaches that good works are the direct consequence of justification, not its cause: its cause is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, which cleanses the soul (really) from sin and pours charity (¡°by the Holy Ghost who is given to us¡± Rom. 5:5 – not by our own selves, or our own good works): but then, once Jesus starts living in us, then He is efficacious in bringing forth good works, as St Paul says very clearly: ¡°For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus in good works, which God hath prepared that we should walk in them¡± (Eph. 2:10).

Those who reject good works will be rejected by Christ as He himself foretold: ¡°then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity¡± (Mt. 7:23).
