What about Protestants who do not want to convert to Catholicism, but do lead good lives. When they die, do they merit heaven?

St Augustine answers very simply: ¡°ipsa division eos malos facit the separation itself [from the Church] makes them bad.¡± In other words, one deceives oneself if one thinks one ¡°believes in Christ¡±, yet refuses the very [mystical] Body of Christ! One cannot say to our Lord: ¡°I love your head, I reject your body¡±. The Church is the Body of Christ (and there are MANY passages of the Scriptures that affirms that!) If one rejects the Church, one rejects those Scriptures. And historically it is beyond doubt that the ONE Church that comes from Christ is the Catholic Church: there is a huge gap of 1500 years between Christ and Luther: yet, our Lord said: ¡°I shall be with you ALL DAYS until the consummation of the world¡±. Where was He, before Luther? When there was no protestant on earth? To avoid that evidence, many protestants try to assert that the Church started ¡¦ later, say with Constantine, or else¡¦ Well, Constantine¡¯s mother was Catholic: how could he have founded the Church¡¦ of his mother?

Their claim is similar to say that an oak tree is born when it has its first branch; from all the growth from the acorn to that branch, is not that already the same tree?! If they would search the early Fathers of the Church, they would see that less than 100 years after the death of the last apostle, the real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist is already very clearly affirmed; devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary (even ¡°Co-redemption¡±) is already very clearly affirmed, and evidently the hierarchy of the Church with the Pope, the Bishops, priests, deacons, etc. One can easily see the organic and continuous growth of the Church from the Apostles all through the centuries till today.

St Paul understood the mystery of the Church in a very vivid way, when our Lord threw him off his horse and said to him: ¡°Saul, Saul, why dost thou persecute ME?¡± Up to that day, he thought he was a good Jew, very fervent worshipper of the God of Israel: that was not what Jesus thought of him! Jesus does not rebuke him for persecuting his friends, not even for hurting his members, but for hurting HIMSELF: in other words, Jesus was taking very personally the offenses Saul was doing to the members of the Church. In the same way, our Lord says to all the Protestants: ¡°Why do you reject ME?¡± when they reject His Church, His Body, the Catholic Church.

We need to pray much for these Protestants, because as St Paul says for the Jews: ¡°they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge¡± (Rom. 10:2). Their BIG sin is the rejection of the Church, of the very Body of Christ. May our Lord have mercy on them, and open their eyes on this big truth, so that they may at last embrace our Lord Jesus Christ, Head and Body, i.e. Jesus and His Church, the Catholic Church.
