On the Church¡¯s Two Calendars
Q1 Father, I looked at both the traditional and ¡®modern¡¯ calendars, there are so many differences between the two. Which would you recommend I follow and why? Why the differences?
A1 ¡°Follow the traditional calendar! The Traditional Calendar is the fruit of the devotion of the centuries, with new Saints added over the years, and some fading away in a natural manner. The New Calendar is the artificial making of a commission of people who suppressed so many feasts (they are still in the ¡°list of saints¡±, but are NO LONGER CELEBRATED). And also they moved away from their traditional dates many saints: the result was to CUT OFF people from Tradition. The innovators wanted to do all things new.
Q2 Why did you say it was to cut off people from tradition because the new calendar has many more feasts of saints. Can¡¯t get any more traditional than celebrating the saints¡¦.
A2 ¡°No the new calendar does not have ¡°more¡± feasts of Saints. Calendars that are published give names of Saints who were and still are in the Martyrology – but they are not ¡°celebrated¡±, i.e. the priest does not say the Mass in their honour. Usually many of the ¡°weekday masses¡± are simply the previous Sunday Mass, rather than the Mass of those saints. Example of reduction: before, there used to be the feast of St Michael (29 Sept), of St Gabriel (24 March) and of St Raphael (24 October), now there is only ONE feast of the Angels (29th Sept). The Guardian Angels¡¯ feast is one more example of the suppressed feasts¡¦ Another example was the feast of the circumcision, which disappeared; it is now called the feast of the motherhood of Mary (used to be on 11 Oct), and many other feasts of our Lady disappeared from the ¡°celebrated Masses¡±.
Why did they change the dates of saints? Sometimes, a Saint would be canonised and had died on a day when another Saint was already celebrated: thus the Pope put his/her feast either a few days later, or on a significant day (e.g. translation of relics, or ordination day, as for St Ambrose). Typical example: St Thérèse of the Child Jesus died on the 30th September. This is the feast of St Jerome, from ancient times. So Pope Pius XI put her feast on 3rd October. Now they put her back on 30th September¡¦ and St Jerome disappeared!
St Jerome is a very important saint! But do they celebrate him? I mean: a day when the priests are bound to say Mass in his honour? So you see my point: they have suppressed many feasts of saints.
This is another thing: in many cases, they made the feasts of the Saints ¡°Optional¡±¡¦ The idea of ¡°ordinary time¡± is very secular, and not traditional at all. There is no such thing in the Traditional calendar.
Why was the Feast of Circumcision suppressed? It seems to me that modernists do not like the fact that Jesus shed blood for our salvation: and this started on the day of the Circumcision¡¦
