Q  ¡°Father, what is this Rogation Day? A day of penance? What does it mean? Is it compulsory to adhere to? Is it traditional or another novelty?¡±

¡°Rogation¡± comes from the Latin ¡°rogare¡± which means to pray: this is a day of prayer for God¡¯s blessings on the fields, in order to get a good harvest. There are four such days: the Major Rogation on the 25th April, which coincide with the feast of St Marc the Evangelist, and the minor rogations on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the Ascension. There is no special penance required on Rogation days (except on the vigil of the Ascension, not because of the Rogations but because of the vigil). However it is always good to join penance with prayers.

The Rogation days are not days of obligation. But they used to be very widely observed, especially in the farming communities. In many of our chapels we have the Rogation procession, with the litanies of the Saints and the blessing of the fields. All this is perfectly traditional and very ancient in the Church. It is not a novelty at all.
