¿ì¸® ÁÖ´ÔÀº ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ¸ðÄ£À» ¡®»ç¶ûÇÏ´Â Á¦ÀÚ¡¯¿¡°Ô Áּ̽À´Ï´Ù: ±×¸®½ºµµÀÇ »ç¶û¹Þ°íÀÚ ÇÏ´Â »ç¶÷Àº ´©±¸³ª ¡®ÀÌ´Â ³× ¸ðÄ£À̽ô϶ó.¡¯(¿ä¿Õ19:27)¸¦ ¹Þ¾Æµå¸®µµ·Ï ÇØ¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

 ¿¹¼ö¿Í ¸¶¸®¾Æ ¾È¿¡¼­...... ÇÁ¶û¼Ò¾Æ ·¹³× ½ÅºÎ


BVM ¡°worship¡±?


Q   ¡°Why do protestants believe that BVM adoration comes from the ancient goddess worship? They say it is an idol worship.¡±

 
 They criticize what they know not! The Catholic Church does not ¡°worship¡± the Blessed Virgin Mary, but rather ¡°honours¡± her. There is a huge difference, nay an infinite difference, as between the Creator and the creatures! The first three Commandments deal with the ¡°worship¡± of God; these Commandments do not forbid ¡°honouring¡± some creatures. The clearest proof is that the fourth Commandment precisely commands: ¡°Honour thy father and mother!¡± (Ex. 20:12)

 
Now St Paul commands us: ¡°Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:¡± (Phil. 2:5). It is evident that our Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled perfectly the Will of His Father, and therefore the Ten commandments. Hence He did ¡°honour His Father and mother!¡± Our Lord Jesus Christ honoured perfectly the Blessed Virgin Mary, His mother! I think the Protestants who object to the Catholics their love for our Lady have not meditated much on that important fact: our Lord Jesus Christ honoured perfectly the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Gospel is explicit: He ¡°was subject to them¡± (Lk. 2:51). He obeyed her; He honoured her. The Word of God made flesh (John 1:14) honoured the Blessed Virgin Mary, as the best son ever honoured the best of mothers! Now we are commanded to have in us that mind that was in Christ Jesus, therefore all the true disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ must honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, the same way as our Lord Jesus Christ Himself honoured her.

  
That is not ¡°worshipping¡± Mary, but that is to give her true honour. Moreover, since no creature has been given such honour as the Blessed Virgin Mary by God Himself, she is rightly held by the Church to be given a place above all the Angels in Heaven. St Bernard says: ¡°And he was subject unto them. Who was subject? And to whom? God to man! God, I repeat, to whom the Angels are subject, whom the Principalities and Powers do obey, was subject to Mary; and not only to Mary, but to Joseph also for Mary's sake. Marvel, therefore, both at God and man, and choose that which giveth greater wonder, whether it be the most loving condescension of the Son, or the exceeding great dignity of his Mother. Both amaze us, both are marvellous. That God should obey a woman is lowliness without parallel, that woman should rule over God, an elevation beyond comparison. In praise of virgins it is sung of them alone, that they follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. Of what praise do ye judge that woman to be worthy who is thus placed before the Lamb of God.¡± (Homilia super Missus est, n. 7-8) This is the spirit of the Saints! This is in perfect conformity with the Scriptures. And this is not ¡°worshipping¡± Mary, but rather giving her the due ¡°honour¡± at the example of our Lord Jesus Christ, who honoured her more than any of the members of His Body, the Church.

  
The Protestants have rejected the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass – which is the highest act of Worship, the act of worship reserved to God alone, the act by which we offer ¡°all honour and glory¡± to the most Holy Trinity. Therefore they have left only lower acts of honouring, such as prayer, etc. Now the Scriptures themselves show that such acts are not reserved to God: one may pray to other human persons, as St Paul did (Phil. 4:2, Heb. 13:19¡¦) But the Catholic Church, keeping the Holy Sacrifice for the Worship of God, does not fear to follow the example of St Paul and pray to the Saints that they intercede for us.

  
If anyone says that the Church has taken from ¡°pagan goddess worship¡±, he only shows by such claim that he ignores the early Church and has read very little from the early Fathers. On the contrary, anyone familiar with the writings of the early Church would recognise immediately that the Church was very careful to avoid anything that would even give the impression of anything common with pagan worship. The very vocabulary of the Church is there to prove it: the choice of words such as ¡°presbyteros (priest), episcopos (bishop)¡±, etc. instead of ¡°hieros, etc.¡± is there to prove that they wanted to set the worship of the New Testament aside from both the pagan worship and the figures of the Old Testament. It is now a spiritual worship, as far above the pagan worship as truth above error or heaven above hell, and as far above the worship of the Old Testament as the fulfilment of the figures is above the figures themselves.

 Our Lord has given His mother to ¡°the beloved disciple¡±: anyone who wants to be a ¡°beloved disciple¡± of Christ ought to ¡°take her into his own¡± (John 19:27).
