Q  Why did Cardinal Siri and Philosopher Jean Gi Tong oppose Archbishop M. Lefebvre¡¯s Episcopate Consecration in 1988?

A  Cardinal Siri was a good Cardinal under Pope Pius XII, but when the wind of power changed in the Church under Pope Paul VI, he did not have the courage to stand up and resist the novelties. He did help some ¡°conservative¡± people, but not to the point of actually keeping the Traditional Mass. So he did not understand the courage of Archbishop Lefebvre.

Guitton was a philosopher, personal friend of Paul VI, which means that there must have been some measure of liberalism in him¡¦ In 1976, he did advise Paul VI to allow Archbishop Lefebvre to keep the Traditional Mass, but Paul VI did not follow that advice. Yet Guitton himself was not particularly attached to the Mass; as far as I know, he went along with the new Mass, and thus it is not surprising that he did not understand the courage of Archbishop Lefebvre either.

It is interesting to see now that you have four Cardinals that have sent some ¡°dubia¡±, i.e. questions on important matters of Faith and morals, to the Pope, reminding him that his was the duty to keep entirely and expose faithfully the deposit of Faith. What they are doing today is exactly what Archbishop Lefebvre did in 1985: and the no-response he got from the Pope at the time was one of the two reason (the other was Assis in 1986) for the Consecrations of 1988. Now these good Cardinals are actually showing to many – by their actions, practically imitating Archbishop Lefebvre¡¯s actions of 1985 – that Archbishop Lefebvre was right then, 30 years before them.

I hope these answers help somehow. Questions of history and about people are not all ¡°black and white¡±, because there are many aspects to be considered. However it is important to keep the principles clear.

Yours sincerely in Jesus and Mary,
Father François Laisney
