A   A Cardinal in Korea spoke about the miracle of five loaves of bread and two fishes. He said it was not Jesus¡¯s miracle. At that time when many people were not willing to show their foods, a boy voluntarily showed down his food..., and they successively their foods. So it became many leftover foods. He exclaimed the importance of communication.

Q  To pretend that the people who had followed Jesus had food, but hidden, and were simply unwilling to share, and that all what Jesus did was to encourage them to share their food with one another, is to ¡°EMPTY¡± the Gospel of its meaning, and make it really ridiculous. Do you really think people would have been so enthralled by such mere ¡°sharing¡± as to say: ¡°Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet, that is to come into the world¡± (Jn. 6:14) and be wanting to make him king? That would really be an over-reaction! St John chose only a few miracles – as compared with the other evangelists – but he chose some very clear and undeniable miracles. By the way, this miracle is also recalled by all the other Evangelists.

From St John¡¯s Gospel, it is quite clear that this miracle refers to two things: 1/ to the Old Testament: as Moses fed the Hebrews in the desert, so did Jesus feed them ¡°in a desert place¡± (Mk. 6:35). This miracle is most real, as was the feeding with manna in the desert! 2/ to the New Testament: the feeding of the body announces the feeding of the soul by the Heavenly Food, the holy Eucharist: see the whole end of chapter 6 of St John, when Jesus comments on the past miracle and announces the Eucharist.

This kind of reducing the Gospel to a simply ¡°nice sharing story¡± is typical of the modernist exegesis, that empties the Scriptures of their meaning – and is FAR, very far from the teaching of the Fathers, who were so close to Jesus and to the Apostles: many of them had learnt either directly from them or from those who just heard them.  Keep the Faith!

Yours sincerely in Jesus and Mary,
Father François Laisney
