Animals in the Bible

Q Could you tell me the images of the aninmals in the Bible?

A 1/ the lion: it can signify the devil, such as in this passage: ¡°Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour¡± (1 Pet. 5:8). Or it can signify Christ, such as in this passage: ¡°Weep not; behold the lion of the tribe of Juda, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof¡±(Apoc. 5:5).

2/ the lamb: it can signify Christ (often, such as: ¡°Behold the Lamb of God¡¦¡± Jn. 1:29) but one of the beasts of the Apocalypse looked like a lamb: ¡°And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns, like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon¡± (Apoc. 13:11).

3/ the eagle, an unclean animal (Deut. 14:12) can be a symbol of pride (¡°The pride of thy heart hath lifted thee up, who dwellest in the clefts of the rocks, and settest up thy throne on high: who sayest in thy heart: Who shall bring me down to the ground? Though thou be exalted as an eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars: thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord¡± Abdias 1:3-4 – note that Abdias is sometimes called Obadias by Protestants, following modern Hebrew versions rather than the Septuagint).

But the Eagle can also signify good animal (one the four animals of the Apocalypse 4:7) or the good angel helping the church (Apoc. 12:14), etc.

4/ The serpent can signify evil (many times, such as in Gen. 3:1-15), or can even signify Christ, like the brazen serpent erected by Moses in the desert, see ¡°And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up:¡± (Jn. 3:14)
