시빌의 예언/Sybils's Prophecy    

                                                             

질문  신부님은 강론에서 그리스 예언자 시빌의 예언을 살짝 언급하셨는데, 사람들은 말하길, 가톨릭교회가 중세시대에 이교도들을 개종과 동화시키려고 그녀의 예언을 이용했다고 합니다. 마지막 시대를 예언하고 있는데 신부님은 그것을 믿는가요?

 

답변 시빌의 저서들은 (중세가 아닌) 초대교회 때부터 알려졌습니다. 성 요한 종도의 사후(死後) 50년이 채 안되어 치명자 성 유스티노는 자신의 저서에서 여러 차례 시빌의 예언을 언급하였습니다. 성 아우구스티누스 역시 그렇습니다. 그러나 그 예언들은 “너희 이교도 예언자조차 그리스도를 주장하셨다”라는 토론을 통하여 이교들을 회두시키려고 이교도들에게 언급된 것이지, 가톨릭교회 자체는 시빌의 ‘예언들‘에 대한 믿음을 가지고 있지는 않았습니다. 그와는 반대로 성 아우구스티누스 (그리고 몇 몇 분들은)는 그 예언들에 대해 주의하라고 합니다. 예를 들어 성인은 언급하길, 시세로(Cicero)는 직접 그 예언들을 언급했다하면서 그 예언들이란 너무나 모호성이 많아 무엇이든 (상황을 빗대보면) 일어날 수 있는 것이라 합니다. 그 누구도 그렇게 예언할 수 있습니다!

 

시빌의 예언들을 성경의 예언들과 동일선상에 결코 놓을 수가 없습니다. 이러한 예언에 ‘믿음’을 주어서는 안 됩니다. 그러나 그 예언들 몇 가지(겨우 소수만이)는 천주님에 의한 진정한 영감으로 이루어진 것일 수는 있으니, 이는 이교도들 가운데서 그 예언을 통하여 그리스도에 관해 배우고자 하는 어떤 사람들에게 도움을 주기 위해서입니다. 그래서 신의 도성이라는 책 18장에서 성 아우구스티누스는 Eritrea로부터 어떤 시빌의 예언에 관하여 모든 페이지를 할애하고 있는데, 이는 “분명히 그리스도에 관한 글”이라 합니다.(de Civitate Dei, 18:23,1-2)

 

 ‘인간의 신앙’을 줄 수 있겠지만 그런 예언에게는 ‘천주님의 신앙’을 줄 수는 없습니다. 인간의 신앙은 사람의 증언에 기반을 두지만, 천주님에 관한 신앙은 천주님의 증언, 천주님에 의해 보증된 증언에 바탕을 둡니다. 설령 진짜 영감에 의한 것이라도 이러한 시빌의 예언 구절은 (상호 연결되지 않고) 따로 고립되어있다는 사실로 비추어 보아 ‘천주님 신앙’으로서의 가치가 없는 것은 그 설명에 대한 진정성이 다른 사람들에 의해 거의 확증되기 어렵기 때문입니다. 그래서 같은 성 아우구스티누스는 다른 장소에서 말하길, 때때로 이교도들이 그와 같은 증언을 했다는 그리스도인들을 비난하였답니다. 이것은 매우 거짓말 같은데 왜냐하면 - 제가 말한 것처럼- 성 유스티노는 이미 그리스인들에게 저 예언들을 인용할 수 있었는데, 그리스인들은 그 인용의 정확성을 확인하는 더 나은 위에 있었기 때문입니다. 성 유스티노 자신이 그가 회두하기 전에는 이교도 철학자였고 그래서 그가 이교도들에게 보낸 글들이 이교도들에게 받아드려졌다는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 성 아우구스티누스는 말하길, 가톨릭 신자들은 구약의 예언들을 훨씬 더 선호했다고 하는데, 왜냐하면 신자들은 저런 비난에 아무 염려할 필요가 없기 때문이었습니다. 왜냐하면 그 자료는 믿지 않는 유대인 손 안에 있었고 그 유대인들은 그리스도를 거부하였으며, ‘그걸 조작’했다는 비난을 받을 리 만무하기 때문입니다. 그래서 성 아우구스티누스는 바로 이 유대인들의 불충으로부터 선을 이끌어내면서 천주섭리의 지혜를 보여줍니다. 이것은 구약의 예언들에 대하여 진리의 보증을 주었습니다!

 

그래서 시빌의 예언을 언급하지만 저들의 저작에 대하여 ‘천주님에 관한 신앙’을 준다는 것은 같지 않습니다! 저 예언들은 초대교회뿐만 아니라 중세시대 (e.g. in the dies irae)에도 언급된 것이지만, 그러나 교회는 저 예언에게 성서와 같은 동등한 예언의 가치를 결코 주지 않았습니다! 오늘날에도 저것과 같은 교회의 태도를 지속해나가야 합니다.

Q  I can remember you shortly spoke about Sybils, Greek prophet, in your sermon. People say that the Catholic Church in the Middle Age adopted her prophecy to convert and assimilate pagans. People believe that she predicted the last times. Do you believe in her oracles?

 

A  The writings of the Sibyls were known from the early church. Less than 50 years after St John’s death, St Justin martyr mentions several times the Sibyl in his writings. St Augustine mentions them too. However, these were mentioned to the pagans, in order to help them convert, with the argument: “even some of YOUR prophets announced Christ”, but the Church herself did not have FAITH in the sibylline “prophecies”. On the contrary, we see St Augustine (and others) caution against them. For instance, he mentions how Cicero himself cautioned about these “prophecies” saying that they were so ambiguous that whatever happened, one could claim that they had prophesised it!

 

 The prophecies of the sibyls are not put on par with Sacred Scriptures at all. One should not give “faith” to these prophecies. But it may be that some of them (only a small number) were genuinely inspired by God, in order to help a certain number of people living among pagans to learn about Christ through them. Thus St Augustine, in the 18th book of the City of God, has a whole passage concerning a certain Sibyl from Eritrea, which "manifestly wrote about Christ". (de Civitate Dei, 18:23,1-2). One may give “human faith”, not “divine faith” to such prophecies. Human faith is based on human testimony; divine faith is based on divine testimony, i.e. testimony guaranteed by God. What makes that even if it is a genuine inspiration, such sibylline passage is not worthy of “divine faith” is the fact that it is isolated, so that the genuineness of the account is hardly corroborated by others. Thus the same St Augustine says in another place that sometimes pagans accuse Christians of having made up such testimonies. This is most likely false, because – as I said – St Justin was already able to quote them to Greeks, who were much better placed to check the accuracy of the quote: he, St Justin, himself had been a pagan philosopher before his conversion and knew what writings were accepted by those to whom he wrote. Hence St Augustine says that the Catholic much prefer the Old Testament prophecies, because they were fool-proof against such accusation, since the text was in the hands of the unbelieving Jews, who, because they rejected Christ, could not be accused of having “made them up”. St Augustine shows thus the wisdom of Divine Providence, drawing good out of the very infidelity of these Jews: it gave a guarantee of truth to the prophecies of the Old Testament!

 

So to mention the Sibyls is not equivalent to give “divine faith” to their writings! They were indeed mentioned in the middle ages (e.g. in the dies irae) as well as in the very early Church, but the Church never gave “faith” to them, certainly never on par with the Holy Scriptures! And we should continue that same attitude of the Church today.
