Q  The Lord gave Cain a token so that no one finding him should kill him. (Genesis 4;15)

1. What is the token? I know there are many novels about the token, such as The Mark of Cain written by Tom Nox, in 2010. Of course, I think that this book is dangerous.

2, No one finding him should kill him..... Who are they?.... they will find Cain?? Adam or Eve?? At that time no one lived on earth except Cain, Adam or Eve. Thus, some people insisting the error of the Bible wonder who they were....

A 1/ The Mark of Cain: since the Bible does not tell us what is that mark, only speculations can be said. I am not aware of any Father of the Church who said in what consisted that mark. There sure was a special providence of God watching over Cain, both giving time to expiate his sin on earth, and at the same time protecting him from attacks from others. That does not mean he did not have to suffer from some other people, but that these other people did not succeed in destroying him, they rather ended up suffering seven times what they had inflicted on Cain. The ¡°mark¡± that warned about this special providence of God is not specified.

2/ Some Fathers of the Church have explained that Cain killing Abel happened historically, and is also the ¡°type¡± (image of a future event) of the Synagogue killing Christ, their brother, and then being expelled from the Holy Land (for close to 1900 years!), wandering on the earth but never destroyed, and those who tried to hurt them (like Hitler) being themselves completely overcome and destroyed. Hitler himself commanded that all Jews in his territories wear a yellow star, as a ¡°sign of Cain¡±. The Church never approved such ¡°yellow star¡±, because the Church does not render evil for evil, but rather strives to overcome evil by good, especially praying for the conversion of the Jews. There has always been individual Jews who converted – and became often outstanding Catholics, like Father Marie-Alphonse Ratisbonne, the brother Lehmann, Father Augustine-Mary of the Blessed Sacrament (Hermann Cohen), etc.
The conversion of the Jews as a people has been prophesised both in the Old and the New Testament: see Romans, chapter 11.

3/Tom Knox book is a ¡°novel¡± = imagination, not facts, using some historical characters, but putting in it plenty of imagination, unreal: not reliable at all! Such and similar ¡°novels¡± do damage, because some people are confused by these inventions of the novelist and history.

4/ Who could have found Cain? If you notice that the son of Adam and Eve born after the death of Abel, Set, was born when Adam and Eve were 130 years (Gen 3:5 – Adam lived more than 900 years: old age came much slower for them than for us, the human vitality – and their ability to have children – lasted much longer than now: mankind was ¡°young¡± and VERY healthy then!

In these 130 years, they had time to beget many children, who themselves had time to beget many children: there were several hundred men at the time of the murder of Abel by Adam. And these people had not yet spread over the earth: they were not too far from one another¡¦ And for sure many were disgusted by the murder of their brother / uncle, or in any case very close relative. Hence the danger of retaliation.
The Bible does mention the ¡°many sons and daughters¡± of Adam and Eve (Gen 5:4), some of them were certainly born before the murder of Abel.

Sincerely yours in Jesus and Mary,
Father François Laisney
