Q  Recently, Pope Francis met with the pope of the Coptic Church in Egypt and recognized the validity of the baptism of the Coptic Church. Is the sacraments of the Coptic Church valid?

A  As for the Coptic church, one needs to know its background. It originates in the 5th century, when the bishop of Alexandria, Dioscorus, took the party of the heretic Eutychès, who was a monk of Constantinople, condemned by his bishop St Flavian. Eutychès denied that our Lord Jesus Christ was ¡°true God and true man¡±: one Person in two natures. Eutychès appealed to the Pope, St Leo the great. St Leo, considering the gravity of the question, convoked a council. That council first took place at Ephesus, but Dioscorus went there with some soldiers and ¡°took over¡± the council, beating to death St Flavian (who thus became martyr), and threatening the other bishops. The Papal legates fled from that council and St Leo solemnly condemned that council which is remembered as ¡°the robbers¡¯ council¡± (this is not the same as the first council of Ephesus in 431, which is perfectly legitimate, it is the third oecumenical council of the Church).

Then St Leo the great convoked a proper council at Chalcedon in 451 (the 4th oecumenical council of the Church) at which Dioscorus was condemned. But he refused to submit and this was the beginning of the ¡°Coptic church¡±, adhering to the heresies of Eutychès.

Note: be careful if you research ¡°Coptic¡± on the internet: you would not get the complete picture on sites of the Coptic church and many of the above facts would simply be left untold¡¦

However, these heretics did not change the sacrament of baptism, which can be valid even if administered (unworthily) by heretics. This is the reason why the Church (not just from today) has recognised the validity of baptism administered according to the proper rite of the Church but outside the Church even by heretics. When the heretics CHANGE the rites, then often the Church would not recognise such new rites and then usually either baptise conditionally or baptise absolutely if the changes are such that it is clearly invalid. Thus traditionally the Church used to conditionally rebaptise Protestants.

Sincerely yours in Jesus and Mary,
Father François Laisney
