The date of Christmas don¡¯t appear in the Holy Scripture. How did the Church decide the date of Christmas? Some protestants exclaim; Christmas is the day after 3 days on the winter solstice and it is a kind of sun worship.

A First, in the Bible one can get that the date of the birth of Christ must be ¡°AROUND¡± that time. Indeed Zachary entered in the temple and the people were waiting for him outside, when he had the vision of the Angel announcing him that he would become the father of St John the Baptist. Now the High Priest would only enter into the holy of holies ONCE A YEAR, on the feast of the Expiation, which was on the 14th of the 7th month (lunar month, the first month was around the spring equinox, hence the 7th is more or less our September). After his week¡¯s service in the Temple, he returns home and his wife conceives – she will be in her ¡°sixth month¡± therefore around the 21st of March, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary, therefore Christmas falls around the 25th of December.

Yet, the date of Christmas was known in the very early Church, first Rome, and then went to the Orient. This seems strange, but this is how it came to pass:

With the growth of the number of converts, it happened that some converts were working in the archives of the emperor and had access to the data of the census of Cesar Augustus, of which St Luke spoke. And they found there on the ¡°8th day before the Kalends of January¡± the names of Joseph and Jesus in Bethlehem.

Hence they reported it to the Pope who initiated the feast, and from Rome it spread around.

Thus St Augustine reports that we hold that date ¡°from our fathers¡±, so it was already a traditional date at his time. At the same time, St John Chrysostom in the East worked to introduce that feast of Christmas, as coming from the West. Why would he take it from the West, if not that it was presented to him with very solid proof of authenticity? If it has been celebrated on that date for so many centuries, as the REAL date of the birth of Christ – without any relation with pagan worship of the sun at all (St Augustine fights against any remnant of pagan custom, he does NOT ¡°baptise¡± these customs!) Conclusion: the Church WAS and IS right in celebrating that anniversary on that day, and we should continue.

Sincerely yours in Jesus and Mary,
Father François Laisney
