사람의 원수는 곧 그 집 사람이라

 

신부님, 성경에 이르길, “내가 세상에 평화를 주러 왔다고 생각하지 말라. 나는 평화가 아니라 칼을 주러 왔다. 내가 옴은 아들이 제 아비를 거슬러 떠나고, 딸이 제 어미를 거슬러 떠나고, 며느리가 제 시모를 거슬러 떠남이니, 이러므로 사람의 원수는 곧 그 집 사람이라.”

 

       질문:

1. 우리는 주님을 평화의 왕이라 부릅니다. “나는 평화가 아니라 칼을 주러 왔다.”라는 뜻은 무엇인가요?
2. “사람의 원수가 곧 그 집안 식구라” 이것은 모든 가정에 원한, 갈등과 증오가 있다는 건가요? 완벽히 이해가 안 됩니다.

답변: 우리는 성육신의 목적과 이에 따른 “부작용”을 구별해야 합니다. 

 성육신의 목적은 천주 섭리에 의해서 (즉, 세 위격에 의해) 직접적으로 의도된 것이며, 그러한 목적은 평화의 목적입니다 : 인류를 구원하기 위해, 즉, 사람을 천주님과 화해하고, 저들의 죄를 갚고, 성화시키는 은총과 자비를 많은 사람들에게 부어 주고, 천주님과 이웃, 질서 그리고 평화에 대한 사랑입니다.

그러나 천주님이 직접적으로 초래한 것이 아니라 오히려 천주님의 계획에 대해 악한 자들이 초래하는 “부작용”이 있습니다. 우리는 복음서에서 이미 그러한 바리새인(Pharisees), 로마 당국 등의 반대와 세속 권력에 의한 (초창기에 천주교를 탄압한 한국을 포함하여) 탄압을 역사를 통해 볼 수 있으며, 심지어 때때로 자신의 가족에게서 오는 박해를 봅니다.

그리고 우리 주님 말씀의 의미는 이것입니다. 그분께 대한 반대, 그리고 그분과 함께 있고 싶어 하는 사람들에 대한 반대, 교회와 성인들에 대한 반대가 있을 것이며, 이러한 반대는 치명(순교)을 초래할 정도로 폭력적일 것입니다 – 그리고 그러한 반대는 때때로 가족 내에서도 발견될 것입니다.

모든 가정에서 분열이 있음을 의미하지는 않습니다. 일부 가정의 경우에는 신앙에 있어서 아름다운 마음의 일치가 있습니다. 그러나 전부는 아닙니다. 때때로 한 가정 내에서의 반대는 과거의 죄로 인한 것이고, 다른 경우에는 주님께서 우리의 성화(聖化)를 위해 허락하신 시련에 불과할 뿐입니다.

그러나 주님께서는 박해가 일어날 때 놀라지 말고, 낙담하지 말라고 우리에게 경고하셨습니다. 우리가 이웃에 대한 자비를 조심스럽게 지키며, 충실하게 싸우고, 주님과 함께하면, 많은 축복을 기대할 수 있습니다. 즉, 천주님께서 그들에게 십자가를 많이 허락하실수록, 더 많은 축복을 받을 수 있습니다.

그러므로 우리의 구세주 안에서 놀라운 친절함을 확신하십시오. 항상 여러분을 도우시려는 천주 섭리 안에서 자비와 신뢰를 가지고 신앙을 위해 선의의 싸움을 하십시오.

그리고 복되신 성모 마리아께서 여러분을 돕고 여러분과 여러분의 모든 사랑하는 사람들을 보호하여 주시길 바랍니다.

The Bible says, "Do not think that I have come to send peace upon the earth; I have come to bring to a sword, not peace. For I have come to set a man at variance with his father, and a daughter with her mother, and a daughter-in-law with her mother-in-law; and a man's enemies will be those of his own household.

Q:

1. We call Our Lord the King of Peace. Could you explain the meaning of 'I have come to bring to a sword, not peace.'
2. A man's enemies will be those of his own household.' Are there feud, conflict and hatred in every family? I can't not completely understand them.

A: One should distinguish the purpose of the Incarnation, and the “side consequences”.

The purpose of the Incarnation is that which is DIRECTLY INTENDED by the Divine Providence (i.e. by the Three Divine Persons), and such purpose is a purpose of peace: to save the human race, i.e. to reconcile men with God, paying the debt of their sins and pouring into many souls sanctifying grace and Charity, love for God and for the neighbour, order and peace.

However, there are “side consequences”, not directly caused by God, but rather caused by the opposition of the wicked to God’s plan. One sees such opposition already in the Gospel, opposition of the Pharisees, opposition of the Roman Authority, etc. and throughout history one sees these persecution from civil powers (including in Korea), persecution sometimes even from one’s own family…

 And this the meaning of the words of our Lord: there will be some opposition to Him, and to those who want to be with Him, opposition to the Church and to the Saints, and such opposition will be violent, even as to cause martyrdom – and such opposition will be found sometimes even within one’s family.

 Now it does not mean that in every family, there will be divisions: for some families, there is a beautiful union of mind in the Faith. But not for all. Sometimes, the opposition within one family is due to past sins – other times it is merely a trial which our Lord permits for our sanctification.

But He warned us so that we would not be surprised when it happens, and be not discouraged. If we fight faithfully and with Him, carefully to keep the charity of the brotherhood, we can expect many blessings – and so much the more that God allows crosses with them – in other words, the more there are crosses, the more grace abounds!

So have confidence in our Divine Saviour wonderful kindness; do fight the good fight for the Faith, with charity and trust in Divine Providence Who will help you all the way through.

And may the Blessed Virgin Mary help you and protect you and all your dear ones.
