파티마에 관한 살아있는 해설: 야친타와 영혼을 구하려는 그녀의 임무

 여기에 나오는 내용은 파티마로 순례하는 성비오10세회의 준비과정에서 칼 슈텔린 신부님이 쓰신 <우리 시대의 영적인 빛, 파티마> 책에서 빼낸 것이다. 성모님의 발현모습을 본 세 어린이의 삶은 우리 각자에게 모범으로 남아있다.

야친타는 성격이나 기질 면에서 프란치스코와 매우 다르다. 관상적인 영혼을 소유한 프란치스코는 특히 천주님과 성모님의 슬픔에 대해 충격을 받았고, 그래서 기도와 희생으로써 그분들을 위로하고자 하였다. 야친타는 부드럽고 애정이 많은 아이였는데, 너무나 많은 영혼들이 지옥의 불로 떨어지는 광경을 보고 공포에 사로잡혔다. 지옥의 광경은 그녀를 공포로 몰아넣었고 영혼들을 지옥으로 떨어지는 것을 막을 수만 있다면 모든 보속과 고행은 그녀 눈에는 아무 것도 아닐 정도로 보였다. "프란치스코, 나와 기도할래? 지옥으로부터 영혼들을 구하기 위해서는 참으로 많은 기도를 해야해. 너무나 많은 이들이 지옥에 가! 너무나 많이!”

그의 눈에 어른거리고 모든 그녀의 초자연적인 활동을 살아남게 하는 지배적인 생각은 영혼들을 구원하는 것이었다. 죄인들의 회두에 대해 열정적인 갈증과 진정한 전교 정신으로 불탔다. ’나의 죄인들‘에게 주고자 하는 희생을 찾았다. 민속춤을 추는 자기가 제일 좋아하는 오락시간을 죄인들의 회개를 위하여 자책하였다. 그녀는 항상 이런 생각으로 희생하였고, 그런 생각이 그녀의 습관이 되었다. 죄인들을 위해 고통 받았고, 저들의 입장에서 배상행위를 하였으며 자기가 저들을 대신하였고 그들을 위해 용서를 얻고 회개의 은총을 구하였다.

“야친타, 무슨 생각을 하니?” - “다가오는 전쟁에 대해서... 죽어가는 저 모든 사람들이 지옥에 떨어져! 얼마나 끔찍한 거야! 만약 저들이 천주님을 능욕하는걸 멈추기만 한다면, 그러면 어느 전쟁도 없을 것이고, 지옥에 가지 않을텐데.”

단지 주님과 성모님께 기쁨을 드리기 위해 그분들에 대한 사랑을 위해 내가 고통을 많이 사랑할거야! 주님과 성모님은 죄인들의 회개를 위해 고통 받는 이들을 참으로 사랑하셔.“

야친타에게 있어서 가장 큰 고통은 외로움이었고, 특히 그녀가 가족과 떨어져 홀로 죽을 것이라는 성모님의 계시였다. 그러나 그녀는 죄인들의 회개를 위하여 이러한 최고의 희생을 감내하였다. 이 외로운 끔찍한 밤을 생각하는 것은 그녀에게서 모든 위안을 빼앗아갔다. 이런 경우에 대해, 흔히 야친타는 이렇게 말했다:“오, 예수여! 이는 진정으로 큰 희생이기에 당신께서는 많은 죄인들을 회두시킬 수 있습니다.”

“천국에서 너는 무엇을 할 거야?” - “나는 예수님을 무척 사랑할 거야, 그리고 성모님도. 너와 죄인들 그리고 교황 성하, 나의 부모와 형제들과 자매들 그리고 나에게 기도해달라고 부탁한 모든 이들을 위해 기도를 많이 할께.”

야친타가 몹시 아픈 것을 보고 어머니가 슬픈 모습을 보일 때, 이렇게 말하곤 했다: “엄마, 걱정하지마. 난 천국에 갈 거야. 거기서 엄마를 위해 참으로 많이 기도할께!”

죄인들을 위한 기도 외에도, 야친타가 기도한 사람은, 지극히 많이 희생을 바친 대상은 교황이었다. 분명히, 커다란 비밀이 매우 특별한 방법으로 야친타를 인상 깊게 했음이 틀림없었다. 지옥의 현시와 파티마의 제 2비밀과 제 3비밀 부분, 특히 교황에 관련된 부분이었다.

“....야친타가 나를 불렀다:‘교황 성하를 안 봤어‘ -아니- ’어떠한지는 난 몰라, 그러나 큰 집에 있는 교황님을 봤어. 테이블 옆에서 무릎을 꿇고 손으로 머리를 감싸며 울고 계셨어. 집 밖에는 많은 사람들이 있었고 그들 중 몇은 돌을 던지고 있었으며, 다른 이들은 교황께 저주를 퍼붓고 욕설을 했어. 가엾은 교황님. 우리는 그분을 위해 기도해야해.”

“다른 때에, 야친타가 나를 불렀다:‘사람들로 가득찬 모든 고속도로로 도로를 안 봤어’ 그들은 배고픔에 울고 먹을 것이 아무 것도 없는 거야? 그리고 교회 안 성모님 앞에서 기도하는 교황인은 그리고 교황과 함께 기도하는 많은 사람들은” 

매번 야친타는 예수님께 희생을 드렸고 덧붙이길, “..... 그리고 교황님을 위해.”

1920년 2월 20일 리스본의 한 병원에서 홀로 죽었다. 매장하기 전 많은 사람들이 관에 누워있는 그녀의 모습을 보고 말했다:“야친타가 살아있는 것 같아요. 입술, 뺨이 아름다운 장미색깔을 띠고 있네요... 이 소녀는 3일 반 동안 죽은 채로 있었고 그녀가 풍기는 냄새는 여러 꽃들이 발산하는 것 같았어요.”

A Living Commentary on Fatima: Jacinta and Her Mission "to Save Souls"

In preparation for the Society of St. Pius X’s pilgrimage to Fatima, here is an extract from the book Fatima, A Spiritual Light for Our Times, by Fr. Karl Stehlin. The lives of the three children who saw the apparitions remain an example for each of us.

 

Jacinta was very different from Francisco in character and temperament. Francisco, who had a contemplative soul, was struck above all by the sadness of God and Our Lady, and he wanted to console them by prayer and sacrifice. Jacinta had a tender and affectionate heart which was seized with fright at the sight of so many souls falling into the fires of hell: “The vision of hell filled her with horror to such a degree that every penance and mortification was nothing in her eyes, if only it could prevent souls from going there. ‘Francisco, are you praying with me? We must pray a lot to save souls from hell. So many go there! So many!’”

 

The dominant thought which haunted her and animated all her supernatural activity was the salvation of souls. She had an ardent thirst for their conversion, a genuine missionary zeal. She looked for sacrifices to offer for “my sinners.” She renounced her favorite pastime of folk dancing for the conversion of sinners. She always made her sacrifices with this thought, a thought which was habitual for her: to suffer for sinners, to make acts of reparation in their place, to substitute herself for them, to obtain pardon for them and the grace of conversion.

“Jacinta, what are you thinking about?” – “About the war which is coming, and all the people who are going to die and go to hell! How dreadful! If they would only stop offending God, then there wouldn’t be any war, and they wouldn’t go to hell”.

“How much I love to suffer for love of Our Lord and Our Lady, just to give Them pleasure! They greatly love those who suffer for the conversion of sinners”.

The greatest sufferings for her were loneliness and especially the Our Lady’s revelation that she would die alone, far from her family. But she offered even this supreme sacrifice for the conversion of sinners. Thinking of this terrible night of loneliness deprived her of all consolation. On those occasions, she often said: “O Jesus! Now you can convert many sinners, because this is really a big sacrifice.”

“What are you going to do in Heaven?” – “I’m going to love Jesus very much, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, too. I’m going to pray a lot for you, for sinners, for the Holy Father, for my parents and my brothers and sisters, and for all the people who have asked me to pray for them….”

When her mother seemed sad at seeing her child so ill, Jacinta used to say: “Don’t worry, mother. I’m going to Heaven, and there I’ll be praying so much for you!”

Besides prayer for sinners, the one for whom Jacinta prayed and offered sacrifice the most was the Holy Father himself. Certainly, the Great Secret must have impressed Jacinta in a very special way: not only the vision of hell, but also the second and the third part of the secret, especially in what concerned the Pope.

“…Jacinta called out to me: ‘Didn’t you see the Holy Father?’ – ‘No.’ – ‘I don’t know how it was, but I saw the Holy Father in a very big house, kneeling by a table, with his head buried in his hands, and he was weeping. Outside the house, there were many people. Some of them were throwing stones, others were cursing him and using bad language. Poor Holy Father, we must pray much for him.’”

“Another time, Jacinta called to me: ‘Can’t you see all those highways and roads full of people, who are crying with hunger and have nothing to eat? And the Holy Father in a church praying before the Immaculate Heart of Mary? And so many people praying with him?’”

Every time she offered her sacrifices to Jesus, she added: “…and for the Holy Father.”

Jacinta died alone in a hospital in Lisbon on the twentieth of February, 1920. Many people viewed her lying in the casket before her burial and they said of her: “she seemed to be alive, with her lips and cheeks a beautiful rosy color. …The girl was dead for three and a half days, and the odour she exhaled was like a bouquet of various flowers.”
