6. The miracles of Padre Pio
Padre Pio performed and still performs countless miracles. But the greatest miracles is himself.
Padre Pio spent his entire priestly life within a few square metres going from his cell to the altar and then to the confessional. He never gave a talk, wrote a book or held public meetings. He never gave an interview to any newspaper or news magazine, never preached and was even forbidden to write letters. He just prayed, said Mass and heard confessions. And yet the fruits of his apostolate are truly astonishing.
From 1954 to 1959 (6 years) he received 1,014,496 letters. In 50 years of apostolate, dozens of millions of people turned to him for assistance.
From 1968 (his death) to 1993 (25 years) his grave was visited by 50 million people; more, since his beatification and canonisation. 6 million people go on a pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo every year, the same number of faithful who visit Lourdes or the Holy Land.
From 23rd September 1968 to December 1995, 500,000 graces were received through the intercession of Padre Pio as officially recorded in San Giovanni Rotondo; among them 64,000 contain a detailed description of the miracle and 500 are substantiated by medical certificates.
Padre Pio was a man of prayer; a man of sacrifice and penance; he was the man of the Holy Mass and a great devotee of Our Lady. These four objects of Padre Pio¡¯s devotion led him to have an apostolate with unbelievable results.
