The Rosary Seems Boring to me

Q  when we pray the rosary, does not it seems boring at times?

A There are two kinds of prayer: vocal prayer and mental prayer.Vocal prayer is necessary for humans, because we are not angels, and therefore, unless we get our body attentive to our duty, we end up not doing it. Those who claim that ¡°they pray to God in their heart only¡± end up most of the time by not praying at all. On the contrary, the external prayer is an excellent setting to develop the internal, mental prayer. The Rosary provides that excellent setting.

The mental prayer is the heart of all prayers; it is the heart of the rosary. To better understand that, it is useful to remember that at the heart of prayer there is a great desire for God, an immense thirst for God: ¡°My heart hath said to thee: My face hath sought thee: thy face, O Lord, will I still seek¡± (Ps. 26:8). I want to see God! ¡°We know, that, when he shall appear, we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is. And every one that hath this hope in him, sanctifieth himself, as he also is holy¡± (1 Jn. 3:2-3). The virtue of hope is one of the three theological virtues: faith, hope and charity. These virtues are called ¡°theological¡± because their object is God himself, they unite the mind with God. Hope is very important (and sometimes forgotten). Hope includes this longing that only grows into an immense thirst for God: ¡°O God, my God, to thee do I watch at break of day. For thee my soul hath thirsted¡± (Ps. 62:2)

When you read the writings of the Saints, one thing you remark right away is that they were all tending towards God: their whole life is wholly directed towards Him. Recently I was reading some work of St Anselm: same thing, same thirst for God.
Now – and this is absolutely fundamental to our Catholic Faith: there is ONE WAY to find God, and that is in our Lord Jesus Christ. ¡°I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me¡± (Jn. 14:6). ¡°For by him we have access both in one Spirit to the Father¡± (Eph. 2:18). ¡°For there is one God, and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus¡± (1 Tim. 2:5): our Lord Jesus Christ is true God and true man, it is in Him as a man that we find God: hence He is the way and there is no other. ¡°For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved¡±(Acts 4:12)

Now when God the Father sent His Son into the world, He did not give Him directly to everybody, but He gave Him first to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and through her to others, as the joyful mysteries beautifully show: He was incarnated in her (Annunciation), and she brought Him to John the Baptist and his mother Elisabeth (Visitation), she gave him to the shepherds and the Magi (Nativity), to the old man Simeon and the prophetess Anna (Presentation)¡¦

And what do we ask in each Hail Mary if not that she gives us Jesus? In the first half of the Hail Mary, we see the blessings she received, and the greatest is Jesus, the blessed fruit of her womb; in the second half, we ask her to ¡°pray for us¡±, to ask what if not that we may receive Jesus? ¡°Give us Jesus, the blessed fruit of thy womb,¡± do we say in the Hail Holy Queen.

Now the great obstacle to union with God is sin; therefore, there was need of Redemption, to destroy sin, and Redemption is through the Cross of Jesus. In order to benefit from that Redemption, we ought to be united with Jesus crucified, and this is the whole of the sorrowful mysteries, which culminate at the foot of the Cross, where we united ourselves with Jesus with Mary and the few holy disciples there. Suffering is an important part of everyone¡¯s life: no one can escape it; it will hit everyone at one time. The only adequate answer to suffering is the Cross.

There are three crosses on Calvary: the wasted cross of the impenitent thief, the expiating cross of the penitent thief and the redeeming cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

.

The impenitent thief does not recognise his guilt, wants to get rid of his sufferings and does not fear to add the sin of blasphemy to his previous sins: he wastes his sufferings on earth and prepares himself for greater and unending chastisement.

The penitent thief acknowledges his guilt and accepts the just punishment, and prays for mercy, which He receives much beyond his prayers in a marvellous way.

The Innocent Christ is ¡°in the business of His Father¡± (Luke 2:49), the Redemption of the World, offering Himself as the Immaculate Lamb (1 Pet. 1:19, Heb. 9:14) for the redemption of souls. Some people say: if there were a just God, He would not let the innocent suffer. But we should say: precisely because God is just, He would not let the innocent suffer without giving an overwhelming compensation, even the Redemption of the whole world! Now our Lord is Innocence itself, and to Him alone is due in justice the Redemption of souls, because of the infinite dignity of His Divine Person who suffered in His human nature. Our Lady is, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, also Immaculate, and thus associated in the mystery of Redemption as the new Eve to the New Adam (a theme we find in the very early Church: St Justin, St Irenaeus).

Now we are not innocent: we had original sin, and each had personal sins, some more some less. So, we must first accept our sufferings like the penitent thief, and offer them in expiation of our sins uniting them with those of our Lord Jesus Christ. But sometimes we suffer more, and this is quite visible in some saints, like Job, who really suffer more than what they deserved: the more is in order to participate in the great mystery of redemption.

St Paul expresses that many times: ¡°A faithful saying: for if we be dead with him, we shall live also with him¡± (2 Tim. 2:11). ¡°If we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall live also together with Christ:¡± (Rom. 6:8). ¡°If we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified with him¡± (Rom. 8:17). And St Peter says: ¡°if you partake of the sufferings of Christ, rejoice that when his glory shall be revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy¡± (1 Pet. 4:13).

Indeed, the sorrowful mysteries are not the end, but they lead us to the glorious mysteries. It is very important to keep the ultimate goal in front our eyes: there is a reward for virtue, there is a tremendous reward for union with Christ¡¯s Sacrifice. It leads us to that eternal life, in which alone we can fully ¡°see God as He is¡±, which is the great longing of the soul all through the joyful and sorrowful mysteries. So, the glorious mysteries give us great encouragement and strengthen us to carry our Cross with Christ in order to reach this eternal life with Christ. First it is manifest in Christ¡¯s own body, and then in our Lady, and then in us.

As you can see, the holy Rosary accompany us throughout our life, and is the expression of our great thirst for God, for Christ, following Him in His joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries, thus leading us with Mary into eternal Life! This is not boring at all.

Yours sincerely in Jesus and Mary
Father François Laisney
